Duns Community First Responders

Duns Community First Responders Duns Community First Responders were formed in 2010 to promote health and save lives Duns.

In communities such as our own, with long distances between homes and large rural areas, Community First Responders provide an invaluable service to their communities. Community First Responders are volunteers who are dispatched to certain emergency calls by the Scottish Ambulance Service when a patient calls 999. For every minute that passes from the beginning of a cardiac arrest, the chances of

survival drop by 10% - Community First Responders trained in CPR and the use of a defibrillator can be a vital asset. Could you spare a bit of time for training, and then be prepared to be on call as part of a rota? You might be able to help save the life of a friend, relative or neighbour. Duns Community First Responders formed in 2010 and currently have seven active members – they meet for training once a month and cover an area of about three miles radius from Duns, to Cranshaws and Longformacus. Responders only go on duty as and when they are able to via an agreed rota, but since all members are volunteers the rota is very flexible. The majority of Responders work, so the most common time ‘on duty’ is outwith normal office hours. Community First Responders on duty are dispatched by the Scottish Ambulance Service for certain types of emergencies – usually breathing difficulties, chest pains, or to an unconscious patient. Duns First Responders are a registered charity and funding is almost entirely through donations, collections and fund raising by members.

‼️UPDATE‼️. Last night saw some of Duns Community First Responders volunteers meet and thank Jack from Borders Competitions for funding the parts required to make the defibrillator in the square ❗️RESCUE-READY❗️once again. His generosity ensures this vital piece of equipment is back in service for our community when it’s needed most. This defibrillator is located on the wall of the church offices.

6.5.26 ‼️WATCH THIS SPACE‼️ update coming soon

‼️UPDATE‼️
Jack @ Borders Competitions has very generously offered to financially support us to get this AED back in working order - we will update our page when it is back in its new cabinet. - a heart felt thanks from all Duns Community First Responders ❤️

‼️AED (defibrillator) in the square between BAVS shop and the Church Offices is out of commission.

In order to get the defibrillator up and running again we will need to replace the box that houses it, as it was smashed which means it can’t keep the defibrillator warm in cold weather. We also need to replace the battery as this has been damaged due to the cold and the pads which were out of date.

Duns First Responders is a charity and as such we need your HELP! We need to raise approximately £1000 to get this defibrillator back up and working! Please visit our page or message us if you can help.

Many thanks

Tonight Duns Community First Responders had the privilege of accepting a donation for the group from Duns Rugby Club, funds raised from the ever growing Charity Tractor Run held in December 2025.

Donations like these are vital to keeping us going and to help us keep saving lives in Duns and the surrounding areas.

Thank you so much from us all and on behalf of Scottish Ambulance Service.

Callum and Darren were on hand to receive our cheque.

2026 marks 15years of Duns Community First Responders responding to emergency situations in and around the vicinity of Duns when ambulances aren’t able to reach patients in good time - there is only one original responder left from the outset Neil Redpath🎖️ We are now a strong team of 9 with a recently appointed coordinator to keep us in check Alison Payne 📋
Our trainer Callum Knox is a busy man on the ambulances 🚑 but passes on his knowledge at training sessions, Darren Aitchison is our tech guy who keeps us right in this digital world 🌎 The rest of us turn up, do what we can to help and support patients and one another 🥰 + Sandy Tweedie
