Calling Junior pipers in Perthshire!

Birnam Highland Games is a member of the Perthshire Highland Games Association (PHGA). This year, the PHGA will re-introduce the Confined to Perthshire Junior Piping League.

To be eligible to compete in the league, a piper must be:

🕵️‍♀️Aged 18 or under as at first PHGA games of the season (Atholl Gathering – May 24).
🏠Born in Perthshire, or currently living in Perthshire, or living within five miles of a PHGA member games, or a boarding pupil at a school in Perthshire

Points will be awarded for the highest placement in competition. Should there be no junior event, then prizes awarded in open competition will count. At the end of the season, awards and monetary prizes will be presented to the top three competitors.

The Junior piping events at Birnam Games comprise MSR and Jig competitions – and competitors play tunes of their own choice. Entry can be by e-mailing the Piping Convenor, Stuart Letford, at [email protected] in advance, or by showing up on the day. We are delighted to have the distinguished judge, Neill Mulvie adjudicate this year.

You couldn’t make it up really but 90 years on it’s traffic hold ups on the A9 which prevent the contestants making it on time. If we reintroduced this event now I would love to hear Craig Dunbar’s commentary on the race 🐎🤩

As the Birnam Highland Games are taking place this weekend, here is a throw back to one of their previous events...

🐎 In 1934 they organised a pony race during the games, however the horses arrived after the games had finished for the day! These newspaper clippings were found in the minute books of the games committee. 📖

What a day! A huge big thank you to all the volunteers who worked so hard in the lead up to the day and on the day itself. The games would simply not exist without you.

Well the weather looks good just now with blue skies and light cloud. Our volunteers have been on site since the crack of dawn and we are ready to welcome our visitors from near and far.
Drive safely and we look forward to seeing everyone shortly.
