Might Oaks from Little Acorns Grow
The Forward West Fife Steering Group has agreed that Valleyfield Bowling club’s application for a grant meets the criteria of either the Climate Fund or the Legacy Fund. A public voting event will decide who is awarded a grant, and this takes place on Saturday 25thFebruary from 10am - 12.30pm at High Valleyfield Community Centre, Chapel Street, KY12 8SJ. The event takes the form of a marketplace, where residents are invited to come along to find out more about each project. This allows them the opportunity to ask questions about the applications, how and when the projects will be delivered, and the wider benefits to the community. Each person attending will be allowed to cast up to 5 votes for any of the projects. This is your chance to have a say. It is hoped that successful projects can be announced on the day.
The bowling club project is entitled “Might Oaks from Little Acorns Grow”. The title was chosen to demonstrate the club’s desire and determination to grow and develop the club. I would ask that you please, please come along and choose our project. A grant award will make a massive impact on the club and its facilities, and will help us build on the work already done these past two years.
Brief Project Objectives
No Water Supply. The club has no flushing toilets, no tap water, and no water to keep the grass healthy. This seriously restricts the activities that the club can offer to the community. By building a rainwater collection system we have an ultra-energy efficient environmental solution that only requires gravity to deliver the water to where it is needed.
No Electricity Supply. The club has no heating, lighting, or any kitchen facility. This seriously limits how the clubhouse can be used, especially over the winter months. By installing solar panels with a battery backup we will have an efficient and environmentally friendly means of resolving this issue.
Waste Management. The bowling green has to be cut 2/3 times a week. This produces a lot of grass cuttings. A very environmentally friendly way to dispose of cuttings is “hot composting”. A hot composting system works up to 32 times faster than traditional cold composting. It can also take shredded paper or card. Excess compost produced by the system will be offered free to local gardeners.
The Garden. These areas have only been partially planted due to cost. More plants are needed. Colourful, fragrant, flowers and berries are not only pleasing to the eye but are pollen rich attracting insects, bees, and birds.
Implementing all of the above will allow the club to offer a wider range of services to the community. Improved facilities and a better overall appearance, both practically and visually, offers much more to the local community. Your support at this time would be very, very welcome,
The Next Stage. The ultimate aim is to build a custom designed clubhouse using our portable building for storage or other indoor activities.
