MORE than 40 leading organisations, including Transform Community Development, have urged the new Scottish Government to put joined up working at the heart of its response to the housing and homelessness emergency.

The Everyone Home Collective has welcomed the First Minister’s commitment to a cross-government approach, saying it presents a genuine opportunity to drive lasting progress on homelessness if backed by decisive action within the Government’s first 100 days.

Home at 1am after a busy but productive few days in Warsaw. The discussions and connections are the things that really stick and it was great to see some old faces and meet some new. The challenges across the continent are very similar, lack of affordable housing, budget challenges and the populism. But the innovative, and commitment to build stronger and more inclusive communities shone through. Thanks to all those who organised the event, the speakers, the facilitators and the delegates.

The National Programme to Redistribute Surplus Food

Yesterday's King's Speech announced the aim to triple the volume of surplus food made available for redistribution to communities in the UK. The National Programme to Redistribute Surplus Food will work with with partners across the voluntary sector, the food industry, the wider funding community, and government to triple the amount of surplus food redistributed.

In response to Prime Minister Keir Starmer's speech to Parliament today, Charlotte Hill OBE CEO of FareShare and The Felix Project said:

"Today's announcement from the Prime Minister marking the King’s Speech is a landmark moment. The National Programme to Redistribute Surplus Food aims to triple the volume of surplus food made available for redistribution to communities in the UK.

“Through the leadership of Number 10, and inspired by His Majesty the King through the Coronation Food Project, the UK's redistribution sector has come together behind a single shared plan.

“Together with partners across the voluntary sector, the food industry, the wider funding community, and government, we are committing to triple the amount of surplus food redistributed.”

“The plan, which has been developed over many months by sector leaders and co-authored by the IGD and the newly merged FareShare and The Felix Project, will see the food industry, charities and social enterprises working collectively, alongside philanthropists and the government. The Bread and Butter Thing, City Harvest, Community Shop, Feeding Britain, His Church, Neighbourly, Trussell and the Xcess Network have all joined forces behind this ambitious vision.”

"This plan is about more than food. When surplus food reaches a community organisation, it does not just fill plates; it supports the lunch club where older people find friendship, the breakfast club where children start the day ready to learn, the community hub where a family gets the housing advice that turns a crisis into a corner turned. Surplus food is the resource that enables this work. Tripling it means stronger communities, better health outcomes and a community sector freed up to do what it does best.”

“Food inflation is set to skyrocket, which will drive demand for food from the charity sector as it becomes harder to balance household budgets. We hope that this funding will be distributed in time help support people who are seeking support from the community sector.”

“I am enormously proud of everyone who has helped get us here, my colleagues across the voluntary sector, supporters in philanthropy, partners across the food industry, and leaders across government. Today, we take the first step towards tripling surplus food redistributed in the United Kingdom."

With Scotland going to the polls on Thursday, polling shows that 61% of voters are more likely to back a party that makes reducing homelessness a priority over the next five years. During the cost-of-living crisis, more people view housing insecurity as a mainstream issue. Voters are clear: homelessness and housing must be urgent national priorities, yet the ambition set out in the manifestos published so far falls short of the radical action needed.

Building more social homes will both reduce homelessness and prevent it more effectively. Research commissioned by Shelter Scotland, the SFHA and the Chartered Institute of Housing Scotland concludes that Scotland needs to buy and build a minimum of 15,693 social homes each year over the next parliament, supported by at least £8.8bn of investment.

Transform Community Development, as part of the Everyone Home Collective, supports the Housing Justice Manifesto and the call for housing justice to be a central theme of this election.

Homelessness affects people and places in different ways, but the foundations of the solution are the same everywhere: more affordable homes, higher incomes, joined-up support and early action. As a society, we must invest in these essentials, protect those hit hardest, and scale up what works so Scotland can become a country where everyone has a home.

We know what needs to be done. What is required now is political will and Thursday can mark the start of turning commitments into action.
The bottom line is simple: we need more social and affordable housing, a strong homelessness prevention system, and joined-up support that makes it easier for anyone to get the help and support they need to avoid homelessness.

Halfway Through!!!

Here at Transform Community Development we're half way through the expansion of our office space at Alasdair Macqueen House. At this midpoint, the project has moved from vision to visible reality, and that shift carries a quiet sense of momentum. Steel, brick, and newly formed spaces now stand as tangible signs of what was once sketched on paper and discussed around tables. Walking through the site, it is easier to imagine how these rooms will soon be filled with people, conversation, and community life.

The new space will provide greater capacity to meet with participants and deliver our work more effectively. It will include dedicated office space for the management team and, overall, help create a calmer, more welcoming, and more supportive working environment for staff. We are grateful to the design team for bringing this vision to life, led by Cameron Allan at Sinclair Watt Architects and to Alpha Projects for their expertise and guidance throughout the build.

Everyone Home Collective and CCPS Issue Position Paper: Toward a Fairer National Housing Agency

Transform Community Development, as part of the Everyone Home Collective, along the Coalition of Care & Support Providers in Scotland with have jointly issued the position paper "Toward a Fairer National Housing Agency". The recommended action plan highlights the opportunity available during the co-design process for More Homes Scotland to create a fairer, more inclusive housing system.

There are five recommendations within the paper:

Build on the New Housing Support Duty
Embed " Fairer Homes That Last " as a core aim
Act as a keystone for joined for joined up support
Leverage national scale and finance for integrated outcomes
Establish a people-first accountability framework to reduce affordable housing need.
We hope by embracing these opportunities now, during the co-design phase, More Homes Scotland can pioneer housing as a catalyst for fairness, prevention and prosperity, delivering not just more homes, but a fairer more inclusive housing system that advances Scotland's vision for improved health, social justice and economic renewal.

The Cabinet Secretary for Housing is expected to provide further detail on the co-design phase of More Homes Scotland by the end of the month (March).
