This week, between two well-being sessions with clients, we visited our tree. Situated at the corner of that wee slice of paradise known as Baxter Park, it stands in memory of those we have loved and lost.

Three humbling donations in a week:

● £10 from a recent client for 'providing an exemplary service' to her and her wider family
● £400 from a client who lost his beloved to su***de and accepted donations at her funeral
● This little box of coins below donated by a 10-year-old girl to 'make funerals affordable'

This week, we attended the Scottish Parliament CPG on Funerals and Bereavement, expertly chaired and convened by Jeremy Balfour MSP and Nick Britten, for very useful conversations and including presentations from both Mark Hazelwood and Dr Vikki Entwistle.

On Wednesday, one of our staff members had three meetings in one day. The first was with a lady keen to arrange a funeral for a great uncle, another with a bereaved family of a murdered son and the last with a grieving gentleman whose partner took her own life only a few weeks ago. All this in one day.

On Thursday, that same staff member sent a text message in the morning with minimal prior notice to their line manager, informing them they were taking a ‘duvet day’, which Funeral link offers to each staff member because death is taxing and because we take the emotional health of our staff very seriously.

We near the end of Week 2025 yet death remains a mystery to many. Our dear friends at Coffin Club Caledonia are running a five-week cost-free workshop in Perth in May and June to help with funeral planning. On 20 May, Funeral link will be present. ‘Mon!

What can Coffin Club do for you?

We aim to break the stigma around talking about death and dying.

We offer you a ‘wishlist,’ a living document that you can update as needed. This will help your family and friends understand your preferences when the time comes and provide helpful topics for meaningful conversations. We can also assure you that there will be things you haven’t yet considered!

Our goal is to educate you on all the options available for your end-of-life celebrations, including burial, cremation, and emerging alternatives not yet widely known in the UK, such as Water Cremation and Human Composting—two options we are particularly passionate about!

We also invite guest speakers to share their expertise on related topics.

How nice to see these fine ladies collecting for NHS Tayside Charitable Foundation, led by Shelley McCarthy, last Saturday at Forfar Athletic v Bonnyrigg Rose. Given NHSTCF's support for Funeral link, we couldn't resist returning a wee bit of the favour, whilst getting a Bovril.

Funeral Link is a Dundee based charity offering advice and practical support for those who wish to provide a funeral for their loved ones but find that the cost is beyond their means. They offer emotional support and connect individuals who are grieving with other supportive organisations.

Our Manager, Ewan Gurr, was pleased to spend time with Social Security Scotland CEO, David Wallace. They’ve invested over £50 million to help bereaved families in Scotland pay for a dignified farewell for a loved one, since 2019. It was also nice to see Funeral link leaflets on display.

What a kind message from Richard Mcintosh at NHS Tayside Charitable Foundation, with whom we met yesterday. Richard and his colleagues have invested over £15,000 in Funeral link to help people articulate their funeral plans, which offers peace of mind and prevents hardship for families further down the line.

One year ago today, our dear friend Jackie lost her wife Fiona. Thankfully, she contacted Funeral link to help secure funeral and bereavement payments via Social Security Scotland and the DWP, which eased the financial pressure. However, the pain of loss and ongoing effects of grief remain, which is why we keep in touch with Jackie, who is still generously providing chocolate crispy cakes!
