Last Sunday we were removing Giant Hogweed in and around Trottick Ponds Local Nature Reserve, Dundee. We use taproot cutting, helping Dundee Ranger Service reduce the use of herbicides here. Some parts of the reserve showed an increase in the plant from previous years, due to severe flooding importing seed a couple of years ago. Most of the reserve and in the young tree plantation, there are much less of these invasive non-native plants, showing the effect of control.

Photos from last Sunday, installing bat roosting structures inside an old Pill Box at Dundee Law. We also cleared non-native laurel, spreading in woodland on the slopes around and removed tree tubes from a hedgerow we planted about 7 years ago - great to see the young trees doing so well.
Thanks to all our lovely volunteers, Tayside Bat Group confirming we were not disturbing bats and providing information and advice on all things bat, to David for materials and to Dundee Countryside Ranger Ranger Colin for providing tools and support.

Photos from yesterday's Rhododendron removal at Bamff Estate near Alyth. Over the years we have cleared a lot of invasive Rhododendron here, and the woods are significantly more natural.

After initial cutting, each stump should be checked each year and regrowth trimmed until the stump gives up.

Rhododendron burns with a lovely crackle. Starting a fire in damp conditions is challenging, but we got there eventually. And I got my potatoes cooked :-)

Our January task was delayed until the 1st of February due to flooding. We spent the day cutting and burning Rhododendron on a rewilding estate near Alyth. We cut and burned nature bushes and trimming up stumps throwing from previous clearing.
Tiring work, but we can see the improvements to the woodland with regenerating native trees or wetland plants where there used to be just Rhododendron.

Our December task was at Dundee Miley SWT reserve. We used large logs left after tree works to create habitat piles (great homes for hedgehogs, creepy crawlies and fungi) and removed some non-native shrubs.
