Dawson Park Community Garden

Dawson Park Community Garden Dawson Park Community Garden is Dundee’s hidden gem! We are managed by SAMH (Scottish Action for Mental Health) and maintained by volunteers.

Please do not send confidential information through Messenger - please email at: [email protected] SAMH manage and maintain Duntrune Community Gardens in partnership with Dundee City Council. The SAMH Chrysalis Project offers a "live" working and therapeutic environment for our clients. You can be referred by your GP, Occupational Therapist, Community worker or just self refer if you would li

ke to take part. This side of the projects offers two years of support and opportunities to contribute your unique skills and interests to the garden. The neighbouring bowling green is currently being developed as a space for everyone in the community, with areas to grow, be creative or just to meet for a chat. Volunteers are welcome and we have a weekly programme of activities that everyone can take part in. Volunteers have set up a plant nursery with plants for sale and swapping. This is our Growing Chrysalis project and has been funded by the Co-op. This project requires no referrals and anyone can drop in to take part. SAMH staff are always on hand to offer advice and practical gardening tips. We can also do talks and presentations for groups, please contact 07800 820594 if you have a group that would be interested in learning about our work in Therapeutic Horticulture. Alternatively reach us via email [email protected]

The gardens are open to the public all the year round, Monday to Thursday 9am to 3pm and entry is free.

This semi-circle of alliums has bloomed once more for the 3rd or 4th year, having originally been planted as part of a volunteers project.
Alliums are often described as bee magnets, which is always a good thing for increasing pollination across the garden! Butterflies also love them - the tiny flowers are packed with nectar. 🦋
What’s your favourite “bee-magnet” plant?

Some of you have spotted that the foxgloves are having their moment just now 💕 This variety is called "Apricot Beauty" and can be seen en masse in our rose border.
Did you know that foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) is a favourite flower of bees? The little spots on the inside of the flower act a a beacon to draw the bees in 🐝🌸

It’s not easy to convince Sue to be in a photo, but on this occasion it was approved because it was a moment of celebration!
Cheers of absolute glee bounced across the garden as she made a discovery - the peach tree in our polytunnel is finally growing peaches! 🥳🎉
Gotta say: Sue, In this instance it’s definitely finders keepers - you get dibs on the first ripe fruit ☺️🍑

Calling all Jens! 🍅☺️
The wonderfully colourful Jen came by last week to collect 4 tomato plants for her home (jungle garden), one of which was the perfectly named Jen’s Tangerine!
The names Ruby, Cherry, Olive, Gem, Rebel, Pinocchio(!!), and Rosella also can be found in our plant sale selection.
So remember to come by and pick up a plant with your name on it, or find one you’d have as a nickname!
- yours sincerely, Vesuvius…. I mean, Tom 🍅

🍅🌱 We are flush with Lemon Blush and up to our lugs in Wine Jugs! 🌱🍅
In case you missed Duntrune Cocoon - Tales from the Potting Shed’s FB post - Here’s your chance to grab the last of our tomato plants!
We’re doing 2 for £5 again and have plenty bargain mystery- variety pots still available too!
We did a (sweltering) head count of what’s left in the tunnel, and have noted how many of the others we have left, and what is sold out or limited!

All are indeterminate (vine) but a variety of estimated heights and sizes in case you are short on space.

if you had your eye on Champagne Cherry, Black Beauty or Sun Baby, you’d best be speedy as there’s only 1 left of those varieties!

Bring cash, a box or a bag (and a list) 😅
remember all funds towards helping our garden projects thrive ✨
and if you need help just ask!

Happy shopping! 💪💪💪
