Dawson Park Community Garden

Dawson Park Community Garden Dawson Park Community Garden is Dundee’s hidden gem! We are managed by SAMH (Scottish Action for Mental Health) and maintained by volunteers.

Please do not send confidential information through Messenger - please email at: [email protected] SAMH manage and maintain Duntrune Community Gardens in partnership with Dundee City Council. The SAMH Chrysalis Project offers a "live" working and therapeutic environment for our clients. You can be referred by your GP, Occupational Therapist, Community worker or just self refer if you would li

ke to take part. This side of the projects offers two years of support and opportunities to contribute your unique skills and interests to the garden. The neighbouring bowling green is currently being developed as a space for everyone in the community, with areas to grow, be creative or just to meet for a chat. Volunteers are welcome and we have a weekly programme of activities that everyone can take part in. Volunteers have set up a plant nursery with plants for sale and swapping. This is our Growing Chrysalis project and has been funded by the Co-op. This project requires no referrals and anyone can drop in to take part. SAMH staff are always on hand to offer advice and practical gardening tips. We can also do talks and presentations for groups, please contact 07800 820594 if you have a group that would be interested in learning about our work in Therapeutic Horticulture. Alternatively reach us via email [email protected]

The gardens are open to the public all the year round, Monday to Thursday 9am to 3pm and entry is free.

Thursday was oor Efi’s last day on the job as a horticultural practitioner 💚
She is moving on to a new era and somehow probably even more time amongst plants! We feasted, talked and celebrated the joy, empathy, energy and laughter that she has brought to the garden across the years.
While there were some tears, there was even more smiles (someone did say that Efi’s positive spirit is infectious!) as we spent the afternoon together as a community.
As a volunteer social media do-er (as well as tomato tom!), feel like I could compile a huge slideshow of photos and videos from all the fun it’s been getting to work alongside Efi, but I did my best to capture the moments in a minute. Like many other participants, volunteers and staff, I have felt so uplifted and supported in getting to know her.
On a personal note, I thought I couldn’t recall when I first met her first, but then I remembered when (as a new volunteer years ago), I went to a Dawson park community picnic, and I got overwhelmed and upset. Efi brought me aside and we had a wee chat and vent on a bench, and it helped me be a part of the day again. Stellar first impression 🌻
We wish her all the best for this next new part of her life. Don’t be a stranger! We’ll see you soon 🌻👩‍🌾

Please join us in wishing the best of luck and weather to Janice (friend of the garden and Tomato Tom’s mum!), who begins her cycling challenge today!

Janice and her friends Kathleen, Angie and Louise (a.k.a “LeJog Gals”) are cycling the 1000 miles from Lands End to John O’ Groats in just 14 days!

Janice is using this epic feat to fundraise for our garden, and we are very thankful to say that so far she has surpassed her original goal of £1000 and has raised almost £1,800 so far for us! 😱

She says,
“Huge thanks to everyone who has donated to my fundraiser, and also for your many kind words of support and encouragement!”

If you would like to add a donation and/or message of support, please check out her fundraising page:

And follow if you are on instagram for all the updates from the bottom of the UK to the top!

“You go away for 3 volunteering shifts and come back to a feast for the eyes 😍😍😍”

This is just half a polytunnel harvest on Monday in the garden! Well will have to get to the rest on Thursday, and give the plants an overdue haircut too!

We are enjoying sampling the different kinds😋

Volunteers get first dibs of our harvests, but we will add more to our cart for the public ASAP!
We would also love if you are able to make a wee donation in exchange for our interesting fruit and veg - especially for some of the weirdest and best tomatoes you'd never see in a supermarket. All pennies go towards keeping us going.
just look for the SAMH bucket or a staff member :) and remember to go buy a plant from Duntrune Cocoon - Tales from the Potting Shed too 🤗
Enjoy!
Have you tried any of these? 🍅🍅

It’s never to early to start seed-saving!
Tom is off this week but took some work home with them - scooping out tomato seeds to save for use next year and future seed swaps.

And don’t worry, the rest of the tomato went to good use - straight into a veggie lasagne 😋🍅
