The People's Project, Dumfries

The People's Project, Dumfries The aims of The People's Project:
• Through community involvement we aim to crown Dumfries and Galloway "The Queen of the South"

A few of our main achievements are:

1) Dumfries was awarded "Top Large Town" in 2011 by Beautiful Scotland and entered Britain in Bloom 2012;

2)With support from the People's Project, New Abbey was awarded "Top Small Village 2012" by Beautiful Scotland;

3) The Peter Pan statue was uneveiled in 2011 to promote the fact that Dumfries is the birthplace of Peter Pan.

4) An acre of ground in the

town centre (owned by the People's Project) was leant to Dumfries Academy pupils to create an allotment.

5) The PP has given over a large area in the town centre to the "Dragons Kick Boxing Cub" to create a gymnasium, complete with a full size boxing ring

6) 120 High School pupils re-built an 80 metre section of dry-stane d**e which they had previously knocked over.

7) The People's Project has risen awareness among the general public of the importance of keeping the town clean and has fitted litter posters all over the region. The PP has influenced the Council, MP's and the Scottish government, particularly it's design of a BASKETBALL BIN at St. Joseph's College.

8) We designed a "MUST DO" guide for Dumfries and Galloway, which has been distributed to local hotels and B&B's, with 14 circular drives/cycles, encouraging tourists to return to the area.

9) Through art work, we have transformed a 100 metre section of wall at QOS home Palmerston Park, and brought the public's attention to Dumfries Castle where Robert the Bruce raised the standard in 1306, by the er****on of a piece of art at the entrance to Castled**es Park.

10) We had hoped to erect a statue to Robert the Bruce in 2013, highlighting the towns important connection to the Scottish King; unfortunately plans were rejected.

11) We have tirelessly worked with the police on litter matters, with the council on a flood wall scheme for the River Nith and we have made numerous donations locally, most notably to: The Theatre Royal; Mobility Scooters; The creation of a Cafe for Disabled Young people; and local allotments.

12) We also created a special POPPY MEMORIAL at Troqueer School.

13) We are working with a new group to reopen the Loreburn Hall to the public, (a massive undertaking).

14) We intend to plant a large orchard close to Lincluden Abbey to complete the initial work carried out by the Chavs organsiation . That is a flavour of some of the things that the People's Project has achieved in the last five years. We don't just talk about it, - WE DO IT!

This morning we managed to w**d, deadhead and mulch two of the beds in the Sunken Garden, before it became too warm. Castled**es Park is looking glorious in the sunshine. The herbaceous beds are in full bloom and the climbing roses in the Memorial Garden are stunning at the moment. If you haven’t visited for a while now would be a great time to go.

Several years ago Mark Jardine commissioned a model of Dumfries town centre from Dalbeattie Men’s Shed. I think you will see from the photos below that they have produced an absolutely amazing replica of the town. The attention to detail is remarkable. We would like to thank them sincerely for this superb piece of craftsmanship. Well done to everyone who was involved with this project, with special thanks to Rolf Buwert, Geoff Allison and Dave Stott(Stotty).

The finished model was delivered and assembled this morning at The Hub in The Vennel where it will be displayed for public viewing. The Hub will be open for drop-in sessions tomorrow 19th June from 10.00am -2.00pm and also Monday 22nd and Thursday 25th from 10.00am-2.00pm. Thereafter by appointment only. Thanks to Dumfries Town Board for the space to showcase this amazing piece of work.

This morning we were back at Castled**es Park and it’s amazing how much the w**ds have grown since we last worked there 3 weeks ago. So we have decided to tackle one bed at a time.
We edged, w**ded and planted verbascum and amaranths in the spaces and then topped with mulch which will hopefully keep the w**ds down.
The final photo is of our Dumfries Shine Community Award which we are delighted to have won.

This morning we were busy in the town centre transforming the empty planters with a variety of plants including perennials for sustainability and some bedding plants for a splash of summer colour . They will fill out and flourish given a bit of sunshine.
We have chosen a wide variety of colours and shapes of flowers which are useful for pollinators and biodiversity.
It would be great if some of the businesses and shops could
help with the watering. Please get in touch if you can help with that.

We would like to thank@ Dumfries Town Board and Jim Barr @ Heathhall Garden Centre for their support with this project.

A few weeks ago Mark Jardine received a letter from Mrs Ina Dacre who lives across the road from the old bus shelter on the Annan Road. She asked if the People’s Project were able to help as the shelter was very dilapidated, had broken glass, peeling paint and was often full of rubbish which blew into neighbouring gardens.
Mark contacted various painting contractors and McCartney got back to him saying they were happy to take on the overhaul of this 1950’s shelter.
They have made a wonderful job of it, taking the paintwork back to find the original colour which they then had colour matched. As well as cleaning and painting they have replaced the broken window panels. The before and after photos emphasise what a fabulous job they have done. Many thanks to Kelvin Millar (Apprentice), Scott McKenzie, James Lennox and William Mason ( left to right in the first photo) who said, ‘ it was a great wee project to work on.’

The People’s Project are delighted to be one of the finalists for the Dumfries Shine Community Award. Well done to everyone who has been nominated. You are all very worthy nominees and we hope you have a fabulous time at the award ceremony tonight in Easterbrook Hall.

Introducing the Finalists for the Dumfries Shine Community Award 🌟

We are delighted to announce the three finalists for our brand-new Dumfries Shine Community Award, which will be presented at the DG Chamber Business Awards.

The award has been created to recognise individuals and groups who go above and beyond to make Dumfries a cleaner, greener, and more welcoming place for everyone. Through our Dumfries Shine Initiative, we have had the privilege of working alongside some incredible volunteers and community organisations, and choosing just three finalists was no easy task.

👏 The People's Project
A dedicated team whose hard work can be seen across Dumfries, from maintaining Castled**es Park and town centre planters to organising litter picks, often in the early hours of the morning. Their commitment to improving our local environment and supporting community initiatives has been truly inspiring.

🌱 A Patch Ae Land
Based in Sandside, this thriving community garden provides a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for people of all ages and backgrounds. Through community events, wellbeing activities, and environmental education, they make a positive difference every day while helping to tackle issues such as littering, fly-tipping, and dog fouling.

🍍 Allan Airley
A familiar face at our clean-up events, Allan has become an invaluable volunteer, always willing to lend a hand with litter picking and grounds maintenance. As a full-time carer, volunteering provides him with an opportunity to connect with others and support his community. His enthusiasm, dedication, and trademark pineapple hat have made him a much-loved member of the Dumfries Shine family.

Each finalist represents the very best of community spirit, dedication, and pride in Dumfries. We would like to thank them all for the incredible contribution they make to our town and congratulate them on becoming finalists for this year's Dumfries Shine Community Award.
