Food Train volunteers build relationships with the older people they support. Over time, they get to know what’s normal for someone and sometimes notice when something isn’t quite right.

A friendly conversation and a familiar face can make a real difference, helping ensure support is there when it’s needed.

💛 Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference.

A Food Train delivery doesn’t always end when the shopping reaches the door.

Our volunteers can help unpack and put groceries away, put the bins out, post a letter, change a light bulb, check dates on food or help make sure something hasn’t been forgotten from the shopping list.

Small things perhaps, but they can make a real difference to an older person living independently at home.

💛 Sometimes a delivery is about much more than what’s in the box.

For some of the older people we support, a Food Train volunteer may be one of the few people they see that week.

So, alongside the groceries comes conversation, laughter, a familiar face and someone with time to ask, “How are you?”

This Sunday, our wonderful Stewartry volunteer Eva Henkelmann will be taking on the Dumfries Half Marathon in memory of fellow Food Train volunteer Stevie Rodger, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

We’re delighted to share that Food Train has received an exceptionally generous grant of £40,000 from the Garfield Weston Foundation towards our core operating costs.

This vital support will help sustain the staff, volunteer coordination and essential infrastructure behind our services across Scotland. It will enable our volunteers to continue helping older people access nutritious food, enjoy meaningful social connection and remain independent in their own homes.

At a time when demand is growing and funding for preventative community services is under increasing pressure, this grant will make a substantial difference.

The Garfield Weston Foundation is a family-founded grant-maker that supports charities making a positive difference in communities across the UK.

A heartfelt thank you to the Foundation and its Trustees for believing in our work and helping older people across Scotland to eat well, age well and live well.
