Today marks the start of Volunteers’ Week, and we want to say a huge thank you to all of our incredible Food Train volunteers. ❤️

Every day, your kindness, generosity, and dedication help older people across our communities feel supported, connected, and valued. Whether you volunteer your time delivering shopping, sharing meals, making phone calls, or offering companionship, the difference you make is truly life changing.

We are so grateful for everything you do, Food Train simply wouldn’t be possible without you.

Thank you for being part of our community and for all that you bring to it. 🌟

The National Lottery Community Fund support parts of our befriending services and we were delighted to welcome Neal Bennison along today to see first-hand what they’re all about.

Neal joined our wonderful group for a seated exercise class, followed by lunch, plenty of laughs and lots of friendly chat. From keeping active to building friendships and reducing loneliness, these moments of connection make such a difference to the people we support every day.

We’re incredibly proud to be supported by The National Lottery Community Fund, whose funding helps us bring people together, strengthen communities and help older people feel connected, valued and supported.

A huge thank you to Neal for spending time with us and to the National Lottery Community Fund for helping make days like this possible.

🍲💛 Could you share an extra portion and make a real difference to an older person in your community? 💛🍲

We’re looking for volunteer cooks to join our local Meal Makers project.

Meal Makers connects people who love to cook with an older neighbour who would benefit from a home-cooked meal and some friendly company. Volunteers simply prepare an extra portion of food to share with a Diner, whether that’s sitting down together for a blether or dropping off a meal.

Together, we’re helping tackle loneliness and malnutrition while building connections within local communities. ❤️

Please share this post so we can reach as many people as possible.

With this Thursday, 7th May, we want to highlight our final two ‘asks’:

Ask 4: Invest in volunteers and community-led support
Ask 5: Involve older people in food and health policy design

What that means to us: Volunteers and community-led support play a vital role in reaching older people who may otherwise be isolated or at risk. By investing in this support and involving older people in shaping food and health policy, we can build services that are more responsive, inclusive and effective - so that every older person can thrive.

As the Scottish Elections approach, Food Train is calling on parties to back our 5 key ‘asks’. This week we’re focusing on Ask 3:

Ask 3: Launch a national malnutrition prevention and screening programme.

What this means to us: Too many older people are living with, or at risk of, malnutrition that often goes unnoticed until it becomes serious. A national screening and prevention programme would help identify issues earlier and ensure people get the right support at the right time, so that every older person can thrive.

🙌 Volunteer with us! Become a Food Train Volunteer

We rely on amazing volunteers to help run our services. Could you spare a few hours Monday–Thursday?

We’re currently looking for volunteers in Dundee, Glasgow, Falkirk, Stirling and the Scottish Borders to support our shopping service—helping with taking shopping lists, shopping in local supermarkets, and assisting with deliveries.

📢 We’re hiring! Finance & Administrative Assistant

We’re looking for a highly organised and practical Finance & Administrative Assistant to support our Finance function and wider national team.

This is a varied, hands-on role based in Dumfries, helping keep our office running smoothly - from financial admin and managing enquiries to coordinating resources and supporting day-to-day operations.

No two days are the same, so if you’re someone who enjoys keeping things organised and running efficiently, this could be the role for you.

You don’t need to be a finance expert, but you should be comfortable working with numbers and processes.

💐 Mother’s Day Appeal 💐

Thanks to the incredible support from communities across Scotland, we’ve raised over £3,300 and welcomed 82 new supporters to Food Train 💛

This generosity means we can continue delivering vital services to older people—helping them stay nourished, connected, and independent at home, so that every older person in Scotland can thrive.

Our appeal also reached more people than ever before. We received new enquiries about our services, connected with people interested in volunteering, and shared Edna’s story more widely—highlighting the real impact of our work.

Whether you donated, shared the appeal, or support Food Train in other ways—thank you. Your support truly makes a difference and helps us reach more older people who need us.

With just 3 weeks to go until the Scottish Elections, Food Train is calling on political parties to back our 5 key ‘asks’. This week, we’re highlighting Ask 1 & 2:

Ask 1: Ringfence funding for community-based food access for older people.

Ask 2 : Enshrine the right to food for older people in Scots law.

What this means to us: Access to good food isn’t a luxury -it’s a right. These asks would help make that a reality, so that every older person can thrive.

💛 “Really, really good charity – support them if you can” 💛

As our Mother’s Day appeal comes to a close, we want to highlight the impact your support will make.

Thanks to your generosity, we’ll be able to bring shopping, visits, and companionship to more older people like Edna, helping them enjoy independence, friendship, and peace of mind.

💛 There’s still time to make a difference. Every donation helps older people live well at home.
