Cluaran - Historical Interpretation Project

Cluaran - Historical Interpretation Project We look after a 6m viking fishing boat! We take it round schools and to community events. We use it to help people understand history, hands on. project.

We also tell good stories ... Cluaran is now a Wordsmith Crafts C.I.C. This enables us to maintain and make a Ness Yole available for use in Historical Interpretation activities, on and off the water. We use it to help hundreds of people get a hands on idea of boat building and the shared cultural heritage between Scotland and Norway. We have also built many skin boats from models in schools to one we can travel across Scottish lochs in.

NithLife are mobilising with The Rivers Trust to survey rivers in The Big River Watch.

Could you take 15 mins to watch any spot on the river and upload your observations using a mobile app?

Survey at your leisure any time between 24th and 30th April 2026.

Step 1: Download the app
Download the free Big River Watch mobile app before visiting the river.

Step 2: Complete the survey by your river
Spend 15 minutes watching the river, and answer the questions in the survey. You can complete the Big River Watch at your favourite local spot, or get to know somewhere new. The survey will ask you about what you see, from wildlife and plants to any signs of pollution. Not sure what you're looking at? The in-app pollution and wildlife guides can help you make an identification.

Step 3: Upload your survey
Press submit, and upload your Big River Watch survey!

If you do take part, Nith Life would love to know about it.

Whilst the theology in this piece is styled as that of a child resenting being preached at - the artwork is awesome.

The sea still challenges us, and even in an era where we race into the waters above, the waters below are still a symbol of challenge.

I wonder how many preachers contemplated passing through death before they spoke. If silence is golden, what worth must our words be before we break the stillness?

The 18th-century witnessed a strange proliferation of sea-themed pulpits across central Europe. We’ve caught several in our net

Did you know that Galloway Longfhada Vikings meet most weeks in Dumfies to train in combat, make things, and learn history in a hands on way.

At Wordsmith Crafts HQ we will be gathering both Cluaran and Quartz to celebrate community.

Shrove Tuesday is the holy Tuesday before Lent starts. Traditionally it was an opportunity to enjoy some fine things before fasting to prepare for the Joy of Easter.

But now we also include GF, dairy and nut free food to feast on. Changing tack to stay on course.
