A massive thank you to Dumfries and Galloway Angling Association (DGAA) for the season tickets that they gave to the Nith Young Anglers yesterday. The season tickets provide these lucky young anglers with access to river fishing on DGAA's fishing beats on the River Nith and on the Cairn Water. What a great opportunity for our budding new anglers!

Yesterday saw the Nith Young Anglers fishing for rainbow trout at Drum Loch on Dalswinton Estate. They had a brilliant day and plenty of fish were showing. The young anglers spent the day practicing their fly fishing skills and landed six trout, with quite a few more lost.

We'd like to thank Dumfries and Galloway Angling Association Dgaa Fishings for the use of Drum Loch and the assistance of some of their members during the day. It was great for the young participants to meet some local anglers and benefit from their knowledge and experience.

A bright sunshine day led to challenging fishing conditions for the Nith Young Anglers at Slatehouse Loch on Thursday. However, a good turnout of competent young anglers resulted in success with fish on the bank.

An enjoyable day was had by all, enhanced by lunch supplied by Drumlanrig Castle & Country Estate. Drumlanrig Estate have generously, provided fishing permits to the Nith Young Anglers to fish their beats on the Nith for the 2026 season.

We’d also like to thank , Annandale and Nithsdale Community Benefit Company, Misses Robinson Trust, and Nith District Salmon Fishery Board for supporting this project.

Yesterday saw the first of our 2026 Angling Taster Days at Slatehouse Loch, Drumlanrig.

Keen, budding anglers had the opportunity to learn the basics of fly and bait fishing before putting their newly learned skills to the test while fishing for rainbow trout on Slatehouse Loch. It was great to see some trout being caught!

A big thank you to Drumlanrig Castle for allowing us to fish on the loch and for providing packed lunches for everyone.

We’d also like to thank the Holywood Trust, Annandale and Nithsdale Community Benefit Company, Misses Robinson Trust, and Nith District Salmon Fishery Board for supporting this project.

Pupils from Wallace Hall Academy attended on the banks of the Cample Water yesterday. This is an important salmon spawning tributary of the River Nith. The pupils planted trees on the riverbank as part of their Environmental Studies course. Morag explained the importance of trees and the interaction between trees and the water environment and the many species that live in or near to the rivers in our region. Davie gave a practical demonstration of how to plant a tree and the pupils then were provided with equipment and had a go themselves. This is a long-term project, and it is hoped that the attendees at yesterday’s event will visit the trees in years to come and remember the day they were planted.

These sessions are funded by The Holywood Trust, The Misses Robinson’s Charitable Trust and The Annandale & Nithsdale Community Benefit Company and delivered by staff from the Nith Catchment Fishery Trust and Nith District Salmon Fishery Board.
