The Stove Network is a project to embed creativity in the structures and thinking that shape a future we all will share. The project is run by a collective of artists and other active citizens in Dumfries and Galloway. The Stove creates participatory public art events to engage the citizens of Dumfries in constructive and practical action in the town. The Stove uses a three storey building in the town centre of Dumfries as an HQ for the project and will operate 100 High Street as a social enterprise. The Stove has a membership of over 100 people ranging from café-owners and wild-food chefs to video artists and DJs. We see the arts not as something solely for an ‘arts audience’, but rather, as a vital contribution to society on all fronts. The Stove is a vehicle for practical partnerships with people and organisations working in Health, Education, Tourism, Regeneration and Environment.

Over the past six months, Moving Stories has been a shared journey of discovery for people all across Dumfries and Galloway. What began as a series of local conversations across nine different places has grown into something much greater: a collective understanding of how we move through this region, and a powerful statement of what our communities need to feel connected, confident, and able to thrive.

Through the generosity of the community in sharing their experiences, challenges, and hopes, they have helped create something far bigger than a conversation about transport—they have shaped a shared vision for a more connected region.

We have heard deeply personal reflections, and we want to thank everyone who stepped forward, for their vulnerability, generosity, and trust. Moving Stories moves forward with a much clearer understanding of where this conversation needs to go, and how we can get there together.

As we, at The Stove, turn the final page on this chapter of Moving Stories, we do so with the utmost gratitude for everything that has been written and the mark that has been made by our communities. For us, the exact shape of the next chapter is still to be discovered, but we are certain of one thing: the Moving Stories journey is to be continued.

We are looking for an exceptional Project Manager (Programme) to join The Stove Network team!

At The Stove, we use creativity to drive change. Our programme of activities, events, and developmental initiatives is the beating heart of our work—and we need someone exceptional to lead its coordination and delivery.

This is an opportunity to play a central role in an organisation working at the intersection of creativity, community, and place.

Meet Gareth, a former professional cyclist and entrepreneur based in Castle Douglas, who is championing Dumfries & Galloway as a world-class cycling destination.
Through his work, Gareth is not only supporting local enterprise and tourism by highlighting our region’s unique terrain, but also highlighting the importance of connected, accessible travel routes, helping more people discover the joy of travelling by bike
Active and sustainable travel is simply about how we move through everyday life — the different ways we get to work, school, appointments or the shops. For some that might mean walking, cycling or catching the bus. For others it could be taking the train or wheeling along safe accessible paths. It might mean using an e-bike from a transport hub, sharing a lift, or choosing an electric vehicle instead of a petrol one or a combination of these different ways of travelling to make a journey work.

Meet Zoe, a Community Engagement Officer from Annan who travels to work every day by walking.

For Zoe, choosing to walk to work isn’t just about the short distance; it’s a lifestyle shared with her family, proving that you don’t need a car to stay moving and connected. By stepping out on foot everyday, Zoe turns her morning commute into moments of joy and a chance to truly experience the town she serves, showing that even the shortest journeys can have a lasting impact.

Meet Mike, a retired teacher from Gatehouse of Fleet who is helping the next generation through Wheels of Fleet. For Mike, cycling is more than just fresh air, it’s about giving the local children the freedom to explore their town safely.
Every Friday, Mike helps lead the local bike-bus, picking up pupils at various stops to travel to school together and with confidence. By swapping the car for the saddle, Mike is proving that school runs are possible on two wheels - fostering a sense of independence and helping the community become connected, one pedal at a time.

Meet Brenda, a walker from the Portpatrick Strollers in Stranraer, who proves that every step can make a difference.

For Brenda and the Strollers, walking is more than just getting from A to B; it's a way to care for their corner of the world. By taking to the streets on foot, they don't just stay active - they clear litter and keep their community beautiful, turning a simple walk into a powerful act of service and a chance to socialise.

Meet Hollie, a young creative from Sanquhar who uses the train to stay connected — travelling to work, to people and to places. What began as the transport choice to college has become a vital link to enable Hollie to work on freelance projects, opening up pathways to possibilities.

For Hollie, the train is a lifeline. It makes it possible to build a creative career while staying in their community, offering a reliable, affordable way to travel to work and collaborate with others.
