The 28th Rotary World Curling Championships held in Stranraer in April this year was a great success with over 100 attending over ten days at the North West Castle Hotel. Following the success and from monies raised by Rotarians at the event, we were very grateful to receive a donation from the event organising team from Rotary in Ayr and Stranraer Rotary Club

Our curling team skip Alex Dickson was unable to make the event and Alex expressed his wish for the monies to be donated to local stroke services which our club agreed with and put this donation to good use with £500 to The Stroke Unit D7 at DGRI and £500 to The Stroke Rehabilitation Service based at Lochmaben Hospital.

This week we were able to present a cheque at the Stroke Unit at DGRI for the donation. Pictured are staff from the Stroke Unit along with Alex and Linda Dickson and fellow Rotarians Frank Jones, Robin Park and Bob Carruthers.

Rotary Children's Fun Day id to be held on Monday 8th June 2026 between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. The event sees local Rotary clubs from Rotary Club of Annan & District, Dumfries Rotary Club Dumfries, Dumfries Devorgilla, Lockerbie and District Rotary Club and Rotary Club of Thornhill and District all working together to provide a great Fun Day to supported learning pupils from local schools.

Rotary Children's Fun Day is a National programme supported by Kids in Mind, a children's charity that offers mental health and wellbeing support for children escaping domestic violence and provides positive experiences for some of the UK's most vulnerable and disadvantaged children.
For more than two decades, Rotary has helped more than 1 million children enjoy a break from the ordinary in a range of ways.
• Exciting activities within school settings
• A taste of the arts with theatre visits
• Trips out to theme parks, activity centres, zoos, seaside resorts and more.

All of this is made possible thanks to Rotary clubs, who help to organise and fund activities to bring fun into lives of children who are experiencing life challenges. This year our local event is again at SRUC Barony Campus and hopes to be a great success.

At our recent meeting we were pleased to welcome Agnes Ritchie PDG from District. Agnes is the Team Lead for Mental Health, Wellbeing and Resilience for Rotary Scotland South, an initiative which is not only a priority for DG Brenda but has been a focus since Gordon McInally’s year as RI President.

Of particular focus for DG Brenda is awareness of mental health in agriculture and farming life, something also with relevance to many of our own members coming from a rural area. The District team under Agnes has aimed to strengthen resilience and reached out to Young Farmers organisations and farmers. There has been training of Rotarians, recruiting the District team along with identifying local areas and carrying out toolbox talks. It was a topic which was of much interest to our members and prompted a healthy discussion and debate.

Vote of thanks was provided by Charles Milroy. Pictured are Charles, Agnes and President Frank Jones.

We’re very excited that the amazing Fiona Crudgington is raising funds for Abernethy to host a group of Ukrainian children this August.

The trip will give the Ukrainian children a break from the horrors of war to enjoy two weeks of respite, joy and adventure in Scotland.

Starting in just 1 months’ time, Fiona will be taking on the massive challenge of cycling 1800 miles across Europe from the Ukrainian border to Abernethy Barcaple, with the aim of completing the journey in six weeks!

Follow her training and her journey at and sponsor her via JustGiving.

Fiona said ‘As crazy as this challenge may sound, the more I plan and pray, the more excited I become.’

While working as an instructor at Abernethy Barcaple in 2024, Fiona was part of the team that welcomed the first group of Ukrainian children and their teachers to visit for some much needed respite. Their visit left a lasting impact on her life and after another group visited in 2025, she felt deeply called to take on a challenge to help raise funds for more children to visit in 2026 as the positive impact the trip had on them was huge.

Thank you Fiona (and Lochie the dog)!!

Following a visit to our friends at Lockerbie and District Rotary Club, President Frank Jones was impressed to learn of the B2M Boys to Men programme which is supported by the Club and organised by Lockerbie Academy. So much so that Frank arranged for Wellbeing teacher Lesley Aird who leads the programme to come and tell us all about the project along with members of Lockerbie and District Rotary Club.

The pioneering mentoring project creates a safe space for discussion and mentoring to encourage expression of feelings and development of emotional language for teenage boys from S3. It follows Lesley’s own passion for the education of young adults and the increasing pressures with su***de and violence in our society. No topic is off limits with some hard-hitting subjects and the mentoring teams 8 boys each year matched with mentors to learn from positive male role models. The outcomes are really positive with improved attendance, improved education and to date the programme participants have gone on to successful further education, apprenticeships or jobs.

The skills learned also develops leadership and gives back to the community with speeches by participants to local groups such as Rotary and a graduation each year and formal lunch. The impact has grown the project to P7 pupils and also a Girls to Women project as well as extending further in Dumfries and Galloway.

Our picture shows Lesley Aird along with Rotarians from Lockerbie and District and President Frank.

We welcomed Shirley Ferrier from The Depot to a recent meeting to tell us about the services they provide in supporting refugees in Dumfries and Galloway. Set up 10 years ago and known then as Massive Outpouring of Love, the name changed last year and suited their base at St Andrew’s Parish Hall where all the charity activities are orchestrated from. Now with three staff, the organisation is a small community led charity supporting displaced people within Dumfries and Galloway and often from around the world as refugees from war-torn countries. Devorgilla have an established relationship often providing unsold clothes from our Pop-up Shop to the charity. In recent years a substantial help from the charity has been provided to Ukranians and with support many are now settled within the region.

The Deport do not provide any legal assistance and the service is purely to support and be compassionate to people regardless of their circumstances. They also offer assistance to others, not just refugees and encourage mutual and active cultural participation in our region.

Vote of thanks was provided by Godfrey Bedford. President Frank is pictured with Shirley with world map of refugee locations. If you are interested in finding out more visit www.thedepot.scot
