A comment from a local resident at a Community Council meeting has literally lit up the cycle path.

Earlier this year a resident mentioned to elected Councillors that the cycle path along the Nith is difficult to use in the evening as well as feeling unsafe due to it not being lit. Councillors took this up for us and we were contacted soon after to tell us that lighting work at the Skatepark was being extended to include the cycle / river path too.

The work was recently completed, with new lampposts from Kingholm Road pavilion to the harbour. They are set to dim during the night to avoid affecting wildlife but can be lit up fully by Emergency Services and Nith Inshore Rescue to support searches on the river.

A lovely example of how suggestions from residents can become positive changes for the community.

RAT POISON ON FIELD: PLEASE KEEP DOGS ON LEADS IN THE AREA

As some of you will know, we informed D&G Council of significant rat activity on Kingholm Loaning and they have now laid bait boxes containing poison near to the farmers field.

The field is actually in crop and should not be used as a dog walking area anyway, (dog faeces contain parasites which contaminate the hay and crops that are harvested from the field. These parasites cause serious illness, abortion and death in cattle, as well as trampling the early growth of the crop which is planted there) but please be particularly careful as poison and dead rats may be found across the site.

Please keep dogs on leads in the area and avoid any rats you see.

We were delighted to be able to contribute to a trip to the Science Centre for Brownhall Primary School pupils. This grant was supported by the Annandale and Nithsdale Community Benefit Company (ANCBC), funded by the Harestanes Wind Farm.
It looks like it was a great day out for everyone!

Some of you may have seen the new signs put up this week by the slipway in conjunction with Nith Inshore Rescue.

Some time ago we became aware that Nith Inshore Rescue and the other emergency services were unable to park multiple essential vehicles beside the river during incidents and exercises at the slipway. They explained that they often have to ask campervans to move from this site which can waste valuable time in the middle of a serious incident and that the other slipways on the Nith have clear signs explaining access is needed.

This opened up a bigger discussion about the appropriateness of campervans parked in full view of rescue and recovery operations where privacy and discretion might be needed for ill and even deceased people being recovered from the river at this point.

We also heard from other members of the community who have seen vehicles here dumping rubbish into the river, leaving litter and concerns about where biological human waste might be disposed of given there are no public toilets in the area. Some residents have also shared feeling unsafe using the public path with people camping there.

One of our members often approaches people parked there to explain the access issue and is often told apologetically that they didn’t know they shouldn’t park there as there are no signs making that clear.

We hope the new signs help Nith Inshore Rescue and our other emergency services in their valuable work; and hope they make the path feel safer for people to walk down.

LADYFIELD LOCAL PLACE PLAN has been accepted and registered by D&G Council as a representation of what the local community wants for Ladyfield.

The plan put forward that the community:
1. Wants the farmers field to remain as it is
2. Wants the Ladyfield site to be protected from housing development and prioritised as open green space.
3. Wants Ladyfield to be protected as greenbelt separating the village from Dumfries
4. Would like the site conserved as a wild park to w the biodiversity of the area.

Shona McCoy, Team Leader of Development Planning thanked us for producing the plan and noted that the efforts by the community council and the quality of the plan were acknowledged by the members of the area committee.

Now the plan has been registered it can be taken into account when the proposed local development plan is prepared. So there are still some stages to come in securing the future of Ladyfield but at least the community hopes have been formally registered.

We have just been notified that the Council has acquired funding for two lighting projects within the Kingholm CC Area. These are Kingholm Quay Skate Park and the Castledykes to Kingholm Quay Cycleway
(along the river).

Both these projects must be fully installed before the end of March due to funding restraints. We wanted to put some questions to residents to help us advise the Council about the wishes of the community:

1. The lights in the skate part will be put on a timer so they are not on all night and we wanted to ask the community what time they wish these to be switched off?

2. The lights being installed along the cycleway can be turned on or off, dimmed or brightened remotely.
How bright do you think these lights should be?
Should they have a switch off time or just be dimmed right down through the night?

3. For those on the harbour, do you prefer the lights not to come right up to the harbour itself to prevent the Quay being over lit?

4. The lights can also give out Wi-Fi via the cloud, would the community want this?

5. Would the community like information or history boards along the route?

Please let us know your thoughts as soon as possible so we can respond to the council as this project is moving at pace.

Big thanks to Liam Templeton and Nithraid for giving Kingholm Quay the opportunity for a Bat Walk on our doorstep.
A little wet to start with but such an interesting walk, with great information and it was brilliant to use the Batmeters to make their ultrasonic calls audible to humans. It was incredible hearing choruses of clicks and ‘buzzes’ even when you couldn’t see them.

Thanks to everyone who came along! 🦇
