Exploring the pressures facing Exmoor's rivers 💧

We're delighted to welcome Professor Penny Johnes from the University of Bristol for an insightful talk exploring how pollution is affecting Exmoor's rivers.

Professor Johnes will explain how different forms of pollution impact river ecosystems, what this means for wildlife and water quality, and the practical steps that can be taken to restore and protect these vital habitats.

One of the UK's leading environmental scientists, Professor Johnes has spent more than 30 years researching the impacts of food production and environmental change on inland and coastal waters. Her expertise has helped shape environmental policies to reduce water pollution and improve freshwater health.

Spotted on Exmoor 👀🦋

Another fantastic capture from one of our members, who spotted this stunning heath fritillary at Hawkcombe Woods last week.

Pictured resting on common cow-wheat, this important plant provides a key food source for heath fritillary caterpillars and plays a vital role in the butterfly's lifecycle.

One of the UK's rarest butterflies, the heath fritillary can be found on Exmoor, thanks to ongoing conservation efforts that help this species thrive.

Big Nature Day Symposium 🌿

On the eve of the Big Nature Day, we hosted an evening symposium exploring the important topic of inclusion in nature.

We were delighted to welcome keynote speaker Dr Mya-Rose Craig (also known as Birdgirl) who shared her inspiring journey from a young birdwatcher to one of the UK's leading advocates for equality and inclusion in the natural world. As she so powerfully reminded us, “everyone deserves nature”.

The conversation continued with a panel discussion examining the barriers that can prevent people from connecting with nature, alongside practical solutions and opportunities for positive change.

We are hugely grateful to Sophia Brown, Founder of Bristol Steppin Sistas; Laura Williams, member of Exmoor National Park; Nick Bruce-White, CEO of Devon Wildlife Trust; James Grischeff, Director of Nature Recovery at Somerset Wildlife Trust; and Mya-Rose for sharing their expertise and insights.

The evening provided a fascinating and thought-provoking discussion, offering much to reflect on as we consider the future role of The Exmoor Society.

Our sincere thanks also go to Sarah Gordon, Visiting Professor in Practise at the London School of Economics, for expertly moderating the event.
