The Shed - Tameside

The Shed - Tameside The Shed Tameside is a registered charity (No. 1175457) based Dukinfield. Opening hours will very soon be extended to offer wider availability to service users.

We offer a chance for men (and Women on Fridays) to interact in a creative workshop setting, socialising and having a chat & laugh at the same time. Mon-Fri sessions for Men and Friday sessions for Women your first 3 hour session is a FREE 'Taster Session'. As this is a non profit organisation there are session fees which are charged at a rate of £6 for 3 hours minimum and for every hour thereafte

r a further £2 per hour charge up to a maximum of 6 hours. Should you wish to purchase what you make, you will be offered a very generous discount which normally means you will be purchasing the cost of the materials used. You may of course bring your own projects in with you and work on them in the shed. In which case the session fee only will be applicable, however any materials you do happen to use on your project at the time, depending on what they are and how much you use, may incur a small charge to cover their cost, a volunteer will advise if this is the case.

We have just realised that we have not posted for ages!

This is a project we are asked to help with. It is for a girl called Savanna who loves Harry Potter. They wanted a board made to hold her wand collection. We designed a custom crest for her in the style of Harry Potter and laser engraved it on a large Oak board which took 5 hours to complete but it is well worth it.

It is now displayed in her room pride of place.

Community Project work

Paul has been adding finishing touches to the large planter we have installed as part of a larger community project on Jubliee Avenue, Dukinfield.

The residents have gave us a huge task involving some large planters, benches, trellis' etc which we are making for them. This is just the start but it is looking fab so far and we can't wait to see the final result!

We post this today with permission from Paul's family. Sometimes it is nice to give back.

We heard some news about Paul, one of Bloom At Leap's members, sadly passing the other month. His brother Darryl, pictured here goes to another Adult Day Service locally so we offered this urn to them, which was turned on the lathe here by one of our volunteers, Allan, for his brothers ashes and Mike said he would burn his brothers details on it using Pyrography.

It was very well received and you can see Darryl here receiving it from Mike, and we are only pleased to be able to do something like this for them.

R.I.P Paul.

One of our Shedder's, Derek, sadly passed away last year. His son came in and asked if we could make something for him. Derek was a big lover of steam trains, so we were tasked with making a sealed box, with no nails, screws or oils and engrave it with this image and the years of his life.

The specific details were due to what this was being used for, it went in to the furnace of a steam train on the East Lancs Railway last weekend!

We were honoured to be able to do this for him, and this is the final product.

WE HAVE SOME FANTASTIC NEWS!

If you remember, we asked Jigsaw Tenants to please vote for our project which would allow anyone who is a tenant in a Jigsaw Homes property to gain access to FREE sessions at The Shed! You have only gone and delivered!

With huge thanks to Jigsaw Homes Tameside via their Jigsaw Foundation we have been given funding to enable us to provide up to 20 places a week from July, completely FREE of charge up to July 2027! This is to both new and current shedders.

You can come and learn some woodworking, or just join in for a chat and a brew to socialise and get out more. We are over the moon with this news as it means we can reach so many more people to help their mental health and reduce social isolation, especially in older men.

MEN IN KITCHENS ARE BACK!!!!

Our Men-in-Kitchens project is back and we are ready to get going. To do this we have decided to launch a couple of taster days to gain interest and let men sample what these are like and plan dates for the first round.

See the leaflet attached for all of the details such as the dates and how to book your place.

We are looking for men who may:

🍴Live in a household of one
🍴Care for a loved one a significant amount of time or
🍴Whose own health may put them a risk of social isolation

The above group of men are not our sole targets and we will be recruiting for other groups as well.

Do you like to help others? Are you looking to do something community related?

If the answer is yes, and you have a little time to spare and you are wondering what you can do then read on.

We are looking for volunteers to help within specific roles enabling us to provide better, and more, activities/services to the local residents of Tameside both here at The Shed and outreach sessions too. More information is in the image below. If you have any questions or would like further information then send email Mike at [email protected]

🎥BEHIND THE SCENES🎥

So last week we had a visit from Made By Mortals who are working on a new project with Action Together involving a range of community groups and charities like us.

This involved an interview, some footage of the guys working and an obligatory selfie of course. It was a pleasure working with the MBM team again and they even caught Mick learning a bit on the lathe, only took him 4 years to have a go. 😂

Keep your eyes peeled for the finished version coming soon!
