Something a bit different to my usual “Makes”, but thought I would share this poem I wrote this morning.
I stood for a while
And watched them fly
As the cool bite of the morning air
Nipped at my cheeks, ears and neck
The sun teetering between two clouds
Hung low in the dawning sky
I watched as they marked the air
With their dark silhouettes
Bursting into view and then away
Searching for sustenance on the ground
Their sleek black bodies steady
Even as their wings pumped
Up and down, so fast
Pushing themselves higher
And higher and then,
Almost as if they had worn themselves
out, they dive, wings stretched
Bodies held still in position as they soar
Down down down on the morning breeze
It is so beautiful, their black stains
Harsh against the pinking sky of daybreak
So quiet and yet so much noise
My heart stilling as I realise
It is so hard to rise, to fight,
To strive to reach new heights
And then, just when you get tired,
To soar, high against the morning sun
Silent yet powerful
Graceful and bold
Showing what those wings
That have worked so hard
Were truly meant for
And so I stand for a while
And watch them fly
And soar,
And dive and rise,
And remember that I too
Am beautiful.
