🚍 Stirling Council has agreed to take over the operation of the Trossachs Explorer bus service on a two-year pilot, starting this summer.

Following feedback from partners and communities, the new service will be expanded to run all-year round, extending beyond the summer months as provided by previous pilots in 2024/25 by Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park Authority.

It will operate on a similar route to the previous service, providing a vital public transport connection for rural communities between Callander and Aberfoyle, as well as providing visitors with access to key tourist destinations in the Trossachs, such as, Loch Venachar, Ben A’an and Loch Katrine Pier.

The service will operate from Monday to Sunday, with four return journeys per day, and it will support connections to commercial services such as the 59 service between Stirling and Callander and the X10A on to Balfron and Glasgow.

It will be modelled on the current C60 service and the recently launched C61 and C62 services that are improving public transport connections between many of Stirling’s rural communities. Timetables and more details about the service will be shared before it starts.

The Trossachs Explorer was commissioned by the National Park Authority over the past two years, starting in the summer of 2024.

The new bus service proved popular, with a 15% increase in passenger numbers in year two from year one, and it was positively received by local residents and visitors who used it for a wide variety of purposes, from walking and hiking to getting to work and reaching onward connections.

Introducing a new sustainable transport option also delivered wider social and environmental benefits to this part of the National Park and the Stirling Council area.

The council will continue working closely with the National Park Authority, communities and other key stakeholders to build on the service’s initial success and to ensure it meets the needs of communities and visitors.

📣 New Bus Service for Drymen and Surrounding Villages

Following your feedback on the top priorities for Drymen, we have been working with Stirling Council and advocating on behalf of residents for improved transport links to neighbouring villages, particularly Balfron.

We’re delighted to share that from Monday 30 March, a new bus service (C62) will launch linking:

🚌 Croftamie – Drymen – Balfron Station – Balfron – Fintry – Kippen

This forms part of a two-year Stirling Council pilot aimed at improving connections between rural communities, following feedback from local consultations and the issues many residents raised directly with us.

The service will:
• Provide journeys suitable for after-school activities
• Accept National Entitlement Cards
• Use debit/credit card payments (no cash)

đź“· Please see the attached photo for the initial timetable. This has also been included in the Drymen Reporter, which will be delivered this weekend.

This is just the start and Stirling Council is looking for feedback on the timetable. Official timetables and posters will include a QR code for feedback, and we hope to have copies to share next week.

📢 Have Your Say, Glass Recycling Bins in Stirling Road Car Park

Stirling Council has created a simple, 3 question, “Bring Site” questionnaire to ask the community for feedback on the glass recycling bins at the Stirling Street car park bring site.

There have been some issues with these bins over the past couple of years, and the council would like to hear local views on what should happen next.

They are considering whether the bins should be:
♻️ Replaced with enclosed bin hubs
📍 Relocated
❌ Removed

Milarrochy Bay - car park improvements from 2nd March

Please be aware that both car parks at Milarrochy Bay picnic site will be temporarily closing from Monday 2nd March for approximately four weeks while we carry out some much-needed improvements to the site.

Milarrochy Bay is a much-loved and very busy part of the National Park, and keeping it that way for future generations takes ongoing care and investment. These works are part of our ongoing commitment as the National Park Authority to ensure the site is protected for people and for nature.

By protecting the green spaces and lochside areas from vehicle damage, we're helping to halt the decline of the site and keep it thriving - for wildlife, for visitors, and for local communities who love and value the area.

What are we doing and why?

If you've visited recently, you may have noticed that cars are parking across picnic areas, on grass verges, and blocking access routes - causing frustration and damaging the natural landscape. Here's what the upgrade will deliver to address these issues:

â—ľClearly marked parking bays so everyone knows exactly where they can, and cannot, park

â—ľDedicated turning spaces at dead-end areas, making it much easier to enter and exit the car park

â—ľBetter protection for the surrounding landscape and green spaces, safeguarding nature and ensuring those areas are safe and enjoyable for everyone

Can I still access the site during works?

Yes. While the car parks will be closed, you can still access the beach and lochside area on foot, but please do not park illegally on clearways or verges near the site. Toilets will remain open on non-tarmac working days and will be clearly signposted by contractors on site. On days when they are closed, signage will direct you to the nearest available facilities.

Where else can I go nearby?

Alternative parking and toilet facilities are available at Balmaha, and parking is also available at Rowardennan, both of which are great access points for the West Highland Way.

Please be aware that these car parks can get busy, particularly at weekends, so we'd recommend having a backup plan if you're heading out to explore East Loch Lomond.

We know closures are never ideal, and we appreciate your patience while we carry out this work to improve and protect the area.

Thank you for bearing with us!

We’re looking forward to welcoming you to our next meeting on Tuesday 3rd March at 7pm in Drymen Village Hall.

💬 Residents are being urged to have their say on proposals to help address Stirling Council’s estimated £12.25 million budget shortfall next year (2026-27).

A new survey has been launched that sets out potential ways for the council to raise more income, make savings and deliver services differently.

The consultation continues the council’s Big Conversation with its communities about how it negotiates the ongoing and unprecedented financial challenge impacting local government in Scotland.

The main reason for this is that the council’s funding and income is not meeting the rising costs needed to deliver its vital every-day services, from educating children and young people, to maintaining a vast road network, or collecting and recycling household waste.

Despite bridging a similar shortfall last year through an 8.8% increase in council tax and a range of savings totalling ÂŁ7.7 million (mainly efficiencies), the council and other local authorities across Scotland must make further difficult decisions this year to balance their budgets.

Residents can help inform this process by taking part in the survey on the Engage Stirling website, with paper copies available in libraries shortly. The closing date is Sunday 1 February.
