Today saw a full day of joint training in conjunction with the Loch Lomond Rescue Boat and the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park Ranger Boat.

With the frequency and sometimes complexity of incidents and accidents on the increase each year, these days build on an already strong working relationship and provide an opportunity to understand each agency's capacity and capability.

The morning featured a series of workshops on stretcher security on steep ground, medical considerations and treatment, incident control and boat familiarisation.

The afternoon had a real time scenario with both a simple and a more complex trauma simulation.

Many thanks to everyone who attended and supported today's training.

16/26

At 12:43 this afternoon, Lomond MRT were called by Police Scotland to an individual just north of the camping management zone at Rowardennan on the West Highland Way, who had been vomiting since yesterday evening and was unable to walk.

After a short search, the casualty was located and assessed before being transported back to the main car park at Rowardennan in a team vehicle.

Given this is the second incident in under a week where contaminated water may have been a contributing factor, we would repeat the guidance that in the first instance water should be obtained from known sources e.g. the Scottish Water fountains, taps marked or known to be drinking water or bottled water (please consider the environmental impact of this one). If water is collected from a stream, it should be treated prior to consumption.

Please bear in mind that filtering alone may not guarantee safety and we would recommend secondary treatment such as boiling or chemical treatment (further guidance in the comments below). This is especially suggested in areas where livestock / run off may be an issue e.g. on the approach to Conic Hill.

We don’t want to be alarmist but we also want all walkers on the West Highland Way to enjoy the hike and stay fit and healthy. Hopefully those reading this are already aware but please also have conversations with others who may not.

At 06:17 this morning, Lomond MRT were called by Police Scotland to an individual incapacitated just south of Rowchoish Bothy having been vomiting since around 21:00 yesterday evening.

With the Official West Highland Way season well under way, we would take the opportunity to highlight the importance of being well fueled and hydrated especially on the section north of Rowardennan where resupply is limited.

In addition, we recommend that any water taken from streams is treated before consumption.

Earlier this month, Peak Training Scotland very kindly ran a 4x4 driving theory session to run through off road considerations relevant to the mountain rescue environment including the differing features and limitations of each of our vehicles.

Last weekend saw team members build on that session with a day of practical skills training on the trails around the Luss Estate. Great coaching and development that will help us realise the potential of our vehicles and operate safely.

Huge thanks to Iain and his team ~ very much appreciated.

At 11:28 this morning, Lomond MRT were called to a casualty who had sustained a lower leg injury whilst descending from the summit of Conic Hill.

With the majority of the team already attending our regular monthly training, a hasty team left for Conic whilst the remainder of the team derigged the rescue rigging scenarios before transferring to Conic Hill.

After an assessment, pain relief and initial treatment were carried out before transfer back to the main car park and onward transport to hospital.
