On Wednesday 20th May, Sykes Lodge 1040 of Driffield had the extreme pleasure of installing Bro. Oliver Parker into the Chair of King Solomon, making him the youngest Worshipful Master of Sykes Lodge in 129 years.

“It’s a great honour to be installed as Worshipful Master. Looking forward to serving the brethren and strengthening our lodge together.”

The ceremony was thoroughly enjoyable and well attended, followed by an excellent festive board enjoyed by all, thanks to the fantastic service provided by RMM Catering.

We are all looking forward to an excellent year ahead under the leadership of W.Bro. Parker, who certainly has big shoes to fill following a fantastic year by W.Bro. Michael Beckett.

Congratulations once again to W.Bro. Oliver Parker and all officers appointed and invested on the evening.

Brethren, what first drew you to Freemasonry… and more importantly, what made you stay?

For me, I’d always known people involved in Freemasonry, so initially it was curiosity that brought me through the door.

What made me stay was something completely different.

The friendship. The sense of purpose. The charity work. The self-worth and identity outside of work and family life. Being part of something bigger than yourself whilst still remaining grounded in your local community.

And of course… the food.

We’re very fortunate at Driffield Masonic Hall to have excellent catering from R. M. M Catering, which certainly helps after a long meeting.

One thing many people don’t realise is that every Mason’s journey is different. Some join through family connections, some through friends, some through curiosity, and some simply because they were looking for friendship and direction at the right time in life.

So let’s hear yours in the comments below.

What first drew you to Freemasonry… and what made you stay?

It’s Installation Month for Sykes Lodge 1040 at Driffield Masonic Hall.

Whilst we don’t normally speak too much about ceremony, this is always one of the biggest and most important meetings of the Masonic year.

This month, Sykes Lodge will install its new Worshipful Master, who will guide the Lodge for the next 12 months.

For those outside Freemasonry, the Worshipful Master is essentially the elected chairman of the Lodge for the year — responsible for leading meetings, supporting members, and continuing the traditions and values that have kept Sykes Lodge going strong for 162 years.

It’s a night that brings together experience, tradition, friendship, plenty of laughter, and usually a good festive board afterwards too. Even the goat has fun.

One of the nicest parts of Freemasonry is seeing members progress through the various offices over time, building confidence, friendships, and memories along the way.

Children who have experienced domestic violence are more likely to struggle with mental health problems, low self-worth, develop unhealthy coping mechanisms and may begin to repeat behaviours seen in their domestic setting.

Thanks to your generous donations, we are proud to be supporting dozens of charities every year who help make a lasting difference to children affected by domestic abuse ❤️

This year marks 162 years of Sykes Lodge being part of Driffield’s history.

It’s been a while since I last posted on the Driffield Masonic Hall page. Between career changes, health issues and busy lives, time has run away a bit recently so I apologise for the recent silence.

It feels only right to return by celebrating something special. 162 years. Wow. At 41 that’s almost 4 times as long as I’ve been alive!

Generations of local men have walked through the doors of Driffield Masonic Hall — building friendships, supporting the community, and becoming part of something that lasts far beyond themselves.

And despite what many people assume, Freemasonry isn’t just “an old man’s club.”

In fact, Sykes Lodge is proud to have some of the youngest members in the whole Province of Yorkshire, North & East Ridings.

We’ve got members from all walks of life and all age groups — different careers, different backgrounds, all brought together by shared values, friendship, self-improvement, and community spirit.

In a world where people are increasingly disconnected, having somewhere you genuinely belong matters more than ever.

Freemasonry gives people that.

Not through pressure or status, but through friendship, support, charity work, tradition, and the chance to grow as a person alongside others who want to make a positive difference.

Behind the walls of your local Masonic Hall are ordinary local people:
• neighbours
• tradesmen
• business owners
• sons, fathers, brothers and friends

Men who simply want to support one another and contribute positively to the community around them.

Whether it’s fundraising, helping local causes, supporting fellow members through difficult times, or simply sharing good company over a meal, the impact of Freemasonry often reaches far further than people realise.

So if you’ve ever been curious about the building you’ve driven past a hundred times, why not start a conversation?

The door has been open in Driffield for 162 years — and it still is today.

If you'd like to know more about Sykes Lodge or Freemasonry in general, feel free to get in touch.

At a Masonic dinner – what we call the Festive Board – following a toast, you may hear the word "Fire" called out, accompanied by a coordinated series of movements and claps.

To those seeing it for the first time, it can seem unusual.

But its origins are rooted in history.

The practice derives from traditional military customs, where gun salutes and musket volleys were fired to honour important occasions or individuals.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, it was also common to fire a volley after drinking a toast.

As Freemasonry developed during this period, it naturally adopted elements of these wider customs – and Masonic Fire was born.

In some Lodges, the tradition is expressed slightly differently, with specially designed firing glasses (pictured) being brought down onto the table in unison rather than clapping.

It carries no deeper ritual meaning – it is part of the convivial, social side of Freemasonry.

But in a military Lodge such as ours, it perhaps carries an added resonance – a small echo of the heritage many of our members share.
