This morning, x4 GMD volunteers and GMD manager attended a volunteer recognition event organised through the wonderful locally based Down Senior Forum 👍🤗

Our manager Dan, sits on the forum and was delighted to attend this morning along with other community volunteers from the Rowallane, Slieve Croob and Downpatrick DEA areas .. 👏

Held in the “Preaching House Pottery” in killough, those attending tried their hand at a variety of art & craft activities including an opportunity to make some chutney .. big thanks to Heather & Paula from CDRCN and DEA officers Katrina, Priscilla & Nicola and of course our hosts Peter & David 🤣🤗🌞

Lovely to see Bronagh from Volunteer Now and her words of encouragement to all those who volunteer 🙏👍🙂

Communities Leading Change

Patricia (Trustee - Chairperson), Macartan (Trustee - Treasurer) & GMD manager Dan were delighted to attend and represent GMD at the Communities Leading Change Celebration Event last night in the Burrendale Hotel, Newcastle.

The event was relaxed and lively and those present help celebrate the fantastic community‑voted projects that helped promote good health and wellbeing across our area.

Good Morning Down were one of the recipient groups awarded £1k under the popular 2025 Participatory Budgeting process!!

The MC for the evening was Barra Best & the GMD team couldn’t resist the photo opportunity 🙂👍🤗

A huge thanks to Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Housing Executive, South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust, Public Health Agency & other bodies for supporting this funding opportunity 👏🙏 and to the organisational team who coordinated the event 👏

We look forward to the next program in 2027

Workshop on up cycling- Downpatrick

Discover the creativity and satisfaction of giving old items a new life at From Old to Gold: Repair, Share and Care, a unique four-day upcycling experience taking place in the heart of Downpatrick during Reuse and Repair Week.

Delivered in partnership between the Council and Life Change Changes Lives, this relaxed and welcoming workshop invites participants to transform a piece of unwanted furniture—rescued from the Council recycling centre—into something beautiful, practical, and personal. Whether you are a complete beginner or already enjoy crafting and DIY, you will receive one-to-one guidance throughout the full restoration journey, from preparation and repair to painting, finishing, and creative upcycling techniques.

Participants will also have the opportunity to explore a range of traditional and sustainable craft skills. Learn basic patchwork with reclaimed fabrics to upholster furniture or create handmade cushions or take a break from sanding and painting with calming activities like knitting with recycled wool. The workshop is designed to encourage creativity, wellbeing, confidence, and connection in a supportive small-group setting.

With places limited to just 20 participants, the programme offers plenty of individual support and a friendly atmosphere where people can share ideas, learn new skills and enjoy the process together. A cooked lunch, tea and coffee will be provided each day, helping to create a sociable and enjoyable experience.

Located on Downpatrick’s historic main street, the fully accessible venue is easy to reach and close to local shops, cafés and attractions, making it an ideal creative short break for anyone interested in sustainability, crafts, heritage skills, and mindful making.

Participants must be available to attend all four days to complete their furniture transformation project.

DEMENTIA ACTION WEEK

Alzheimer’s Society leads Dementia Action Week each year as a national awareness campaign that encourages individuals, communities and organisations to take action to support people affected by dementia. The campaign aims to raise awareness, promote early diagnosis, challenge stigma and encourage dementia friendly communities where people living with dementia feel understood and supported.

The Dementia Friendly Communities Partnership (SEHSCT area) are holding Information Days in shopping centres and local supermarkets to help people recognise the early signs of dementia and to feel confident about seeking support.

An early diagnosis of dementia can open the door to support, advice and planning for the future. It can help people to live well for longer, stay connected with their community, and access the services they need at the right time.
