Our full statement re Kent County Council decision to not fly the Pride flag.
βWeβre deeply disappointed by Kent County Councilβs decision not to fly the Pride flag. Pride is far more than just a flag itβs a symbol of visibility, solidarity, and hope for LGBTQ+ people across Kent. Choosing not to display it sends a troubling message that inclusion and diversity are being sidelined at a time when visibility still matters deeply.
Here in Kent, our Pride movement is vibrant and longstanding. Dover Pride has been celebrating our community for 8 years, while both Margate Pride and Pride Canterbury mark their 10th anniversaries in 2026. These events have brought people together from all backgrounds to celebrate love, unity, and authenticity values we should all be proud to share.
The Pride flag represents decades of struggle, resilience, and progress. Seeing it flown by public institutions tells LGBTQ+ people that they belong and are welcome in Kent. Removing that recognition risks undoing years of progress toward equality and acceptance.
Dover Pride will continue to stand firmly with our partners and local prides across Kent to ensure that even if our flag isnβt flying on council buildings, it will always fly proudly in our streets and our community.β
For groups across Kent, the Pride flag represents 'decades of struggle and resilience'
