Samphire

Samphire Our Mission is to improve the lives of people released from immigration detention and experiencing destitution in the UK, and to support the development of well-informed, cohesive and diverse communities in the Dover area and beyond.

The charity has both a national remit and a local one. Nationally, our Post – Detention Support Project provides support and advice to people released from immigration detention via a Freephone helpline, currently open five days a week. Our caseworkers can assist people to access free advice about their rights, and to access services to afford them basic human needs such as better accommodation, f

ood and healthcare.

The majority of Post Detention support clients, whilst waiting for a resolution to their immigration status, will not be permitted to work. With access to a network of community organisations, Samphire empowers people to seek further support in their community, and encourages them to engage through volunteering. Samphire provides an emergency support service for the most vulnerable, to prevent prolonged destitution, with caseworkers giving much needed emotional support.

Samphire’s annual conference brings together active clients, with speakers from relevant organisations to encourage debate and report on developments in the sector. This forum is a key tool for influencing policy makers, and networking.

Locally, in Dover, Samphire runs a community engagement project working with migrant and British communities to improve social cohesion, and better inclusion of newcomers into Dover and surrounding areas of Kent. We organise the Dover Multicultural Festival, now in its 8th year, and run a relaxed, weekly drop in group in the town centre where people from all communities can come to socialise while receiving help and information from local services. Through these activities and more, the charity plays a pivotal role in Dover raising awareness around migration and making the town a more welcoming place.

Transition Dover are doing the most amazing thing and we thank and support them:

Transition Dover are delighted to share that we are one of three organisations that have been shortlisted for the 'Pines Community Initiative', to potentially win exclusive hire of the Pines Calyx to host a community event.
This is our proposal:
Transition Dover would like to use The Calyx to hold an event for the ‘Samphire Women’s Circle’, a group of local and migrant women who meet weekly for friendship, wellbeing, and confidence building whilst learning English with support from local volunteers. The enrichment day would involve a variety of creative activities to help these women learn more about the local natural environment and sustainable living in a previously unexplored location. From learning and sharing clothing repair techniques, to identifying local plants in the gardens, the day will develop new skills and new knowledge of the local area, leading to a greater sense of belonging in our community.
If you like the sound of our idea, and are popping into the Pines Garden Cafe & Visitor Centre, please do vote for us!
And please share this post, to encouraged others to do so too 🥰

When people are made to feel welcome and are given the chance to take part in community activities, they feel pride and a sense of belonging to the community.

A proud moment for our Dover community 💙

Store Manager Andy Cannon from our Maxton Dover store was delighted to present a cheque donation to Samphire, a fantastic local charity making a real difference.

Among their many initiatives, Samphire organises the much-loved Multicultural Festival, bringing people together to celebrate diversity, culture, and community spirit. This year’s event will take place at Pencester Gardens on 20th June — definitely one for the diary! 🎉

We’re proud to support such an inspiring organisation and the incredible work they do locally.

It was a brilliant day attending the Courage, solidarity and action conference organised by Kent Refugee Action Network (KRAN) and Right to Remain. I came back with a long list of To Do actions and hope the message of solidarity and hope can continue to spread!

Courage, solidarity and action: more than 70 people from across Kent gathered at a conference yesterday - the first of its kind.

The focus of the event - organised with Right to Remain - was on community and building a social justice movement across the county.

Thanks to everyone for coming along (too many to mention here) and for filling the room with great conversation, great ideas and hope! 💛
