⚠️ WEATHER WARNING ⚠️

With temperatures predicted to exceed 35°C in the next couple of days, we're encouraging visitors to stay home and cool. Please take extra care when planning your visit to the Forest.

If possible, save your walks and outdoor activities for the early morning or later evening, when conditions are cooler and more comfortable.

💧 Remember to:
• Bring plenty of drinking water
• Wear sunscreen and a hat
• Take regular breaks in the shade
• Make sure someone knows where you are
• Stay out of cold bodies of water
• Keep an eye on children, older family members, and pets

Your safety is our priority, and we want everyone to enjoy the Forest responsibly during this period of extreme heat.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and we look forward to welcoming you to the Forest soon. 🌿

Our forestry team were busy last week getting their hands in the earth down at the tree nursery.

With the recent spell of warm, wet weather, vegetation across the Forest has been growing at full speed. While that's great for nature, it can make life a little tougher for our saplings in the tree nursery at such a vital point in their growth, especially as they compete for light, water, and nutrients.

There's something wonderfully satisfying about seeing the small saplings finally able to breathe after the vegetation has been plucked from the beds.

A great effort from the forestry and tree nursey teams, helping the next generation of Forest trees.🌳💚

If you'd like to get involved helping the tree nursery during this busy time, register as a volunteer and help these saplings thrive!

Midsummer has been celebrated for thousands of years, with deep roots in both pagan and religious traditions. It marks a time of abundance in nature, with festivities often focussed on fertility and the life-giving powers of the sun.

As the sun reaches its peak, mysticism and magic are also believed to be at the height of their powers.

Many traditions focus on reconnecting with nature. So it is no surprise that trees and tree worship feature heavily in both ancient and modern festivities:

🌳 At the heart of midsummer celebrations stands the oak tree, known as the King of the Forest. Its Celtic name, duir, means “doorway,” symbolising a portal to the mystical and to the darker half of the year to come.
🌳 The beech tree, with its fresh lime green leaves, is the Queen of the Forest and sacred to the summer solstice. To the druids, it represented ancient wisdom.
🌳 Hazel has long been linked to fertility and protection. In folklore, stirring jam with a hazel twig could keep mischievous fairies at bay!
🌳 The aspen, with its shimmering leaves, was believed to carry messages to the afterlife. Crowns of aspen were said to help wearers travel safely between worlds.

Whatever your beliefs, there is no better time to celebrate trees in all their glory with an uplifting walk in the woods. As the sun casts dappled light through new green leaves on long summer days, it is easy to feel real wonder at the natural world.

The power of partnership in action. Last month, we welcomed the Warwickshire Avon Catchment Partnership to the Forest to explore how we can create a more diverse, connected, and resilient landscape.

From water resilience and wetland creation to natural flood management, the day was full of valuable conversations about working with nature to tackle some of our biggest environmental challenges.

We enjoyed hosting you in the Forest and look forward to continuing the conversation and working in partnership.

A local RSPB group was carrying out a survey in the Forest last week and was lucky enough to spot this beautiful brown hare - and even luckier to capture such a fantastic photo!

While a brown hare doesn't have wings and probably wasn't quite what the group expected to find, it's always a delight to see one sit still long enough for a photograph. Great capture, Steve Henman!

Brown hares are renowned for their incredible speed. Their powerful hind legs allow them to reach speeds of up to 72 km/h (45 mph), helping them evade predators across open countryside.

Have you spotted any wildlife during your visit to the Forest recently?
Tag us in your Forest finds this week, we'd love to see what you've discovered!
