đŸŒ± Planting Trees Across Dorset đŸŒ±

Planting trees is at the heart of what we do at Trees for Dorset.

From hedges and woodlands to small community sites, we plant native trees in places where they can grow well and be enjoyed by people and wildlife alike, always with the right tree in the right place.

Planting usually takes place during the winter months, and our sessions are open to everyone. No experience needed, just a willingness to get involved and spend time outdoors 🌿

If you’d like to join a future planting day, keep an eye on our events page. If you have a site you want planted up please get in contact with our plantings officer Toby [email protected]

Volunteers have been taking hardwood cuttings of Dutch elm disease-resistant elm and black poplar at a recent nursery session with Trees for Dorset.

The cuttings are set into warm compost, kept between 20–25°C, while the tops are left cool. This encourages the stems to form a ‘callous’ — the first stage of rooting.

In March, they’ll be planted out into the nursery ground where the root systems can properly establish. In time, these young trees will support TfD’s rare tree species recovery project, helping to safeguard some of Dorset’s most threatened natives.

Hazel Coppicing with Toby Branston

Coppicing is an ancient and sustainable woodland management technique. Broadleaf trees are cut back to ground level (the “stool”) during winter dormancy, encouraging the rapid regrowth of new, straight stems.

Traditionally carried out on a 5–30 year cycle, coppicing provides a continuous supply of timber and firewood while boosting biodiversity by allowing more light to reach the woodland floor.

Trees for Dorset actively manage Eight Acre Wood in Bovington, running four coppicing sessions on the first Saturday of each month throughout winter.

The next session takes place on Saturday 15 March, 9:30am–1pm:

Standing Up for Trees

We support Tree Preservation Orders and help monitor when protected trees are at risk.

When trees are lost ,through felling or disease, we push for sensible replanting, so landscapes aren’t lost forever.

One of our biggest successes was helping stop plans that would have damaged over 30km of tree-lined countryside, including many mature oaks.
Renewable energy matters, but so does placing it carefully 🌳

Out Walking on Black Hill, Bere Regis

Here are a few photos Simon captured on a walk at Black Hill.

One shows a fine old birch with a clear example of witches’ brooming, a condition caused by fungus that distorts the buds, leading to clusters of short stems.

There are also two beautiful ancient hazel trees. Hazel is often coppiced, so it’s rare to see trees that have been allowed to reach their natural size.

Get Involved With Planting

Our tree planting happens during the winter months, usually at two or three sites each year — and members and supporters are always welcome to join in.

It’s a brilliant way for individuals and families to get outside, get muddy, and take part in something positive for nature 🌿

In summer, volunteers help look after young trees by clearing weeds and brambles, and removing guards once trees are established.

Why Tree Protection Matters
Tree protection has never been more important. Development can put trees at risk, sometimes unnecessarily.

Our members help raise concerns so we can work with tree officers and planning teams to protect important trees. Sometimes the answer is simple. Sometimes it takes persistence. Either way, trees need people to speak up for them 🌳

Planting Trees Across Dorset

Here are a few photos from a newly planted native hedge near Wareham.

Trees for Dorset and Planet Purbeck volunteers planted 550 trees and hedging to create a 130-metre wildlife corridor linking two existing wooded areas. Sixteen volunteers, including four children, braved January weather to plant, stake and guard the saplings.

Native species including field maple, crab apple, hazel and hawthorn were planted. Over time, these will provide blossom, nectar, fruit and nuts, as well as shelter and nesting spaces for wildlife.

Alongside planting ourselves, we also support other projects with grants, advice and hands-on help. Our guiding idea is simple: the right tree in the right place.
