Founded in 2003 by Head Coach Ben Geyser and his wife Penny, Dorchester Amateur Boxing Club is pleased to offer boxers of all ages and abilities the opportunity to train for fitness, discipline and personal development. The boxing club trains almost every week night at the Physiques & Shapes Health Club in Dorchester, whilst fundraising hard to build a training centre of its own on land donated by
the Duchy of Cornwall. Starting in the Scout Hall in Lubbecke Way in 2003, the club proved ideal & popular, visited by young people eager to join the core activities of boxing, self-defence, weight-lifting and keep-fit. The club soon outgrew the Scout hall, and the Attic at the Maltings (Brewery) was the next stop. A ring, bags, mirrors everything for a first class gym was set up. As more and more members joined the Attic had to be left behind as numbers dictated a larger gym. The extra size could accommodate even more equipment, and opportunities for other clubs to visit for sparring. Sadly, the Maltings complex was sold for redevelopment which meant that alternative accommodation would have to be found to keep the Club alive. A rescue plan came in the shape of the Territorial Army premises at Poundbury Road, Dorchester which has perfect facilities. Ben Geyser was awarded the BBC South Sports Award Unsung Hero. He went on to be recognised as the BBC National Sports Personality Unsung Hero Award. The Club now boasts a register with both male and female members, thanks to the club’s motto that every child matters and is entitled to an education, sport and enjoyment. Everyone is welcome and parents are encouraged to play a part; ABA Coaches Courses are available for the adults who would like to get involved. Many a boxer says, “If it wasn’t for the boxing I could have wobbled off of the rails.” The Club is regularly thanked by parents saying that their child now has a purpose and feels talented, confident and wanted.
