Volunteer Centre Dorset is part of a national network of volunteer centres that help voluntary and community organisations recruit and manage their volunteers, and helps people interested in volunteering to find interesting and enjoyable opportunities. Our centre covers the whole of Dorset (except Bournemouth and Poole which have their own centre)

We attend local events, shows and public meetings

to publicise volunteering and recruit new volunteers

We encourage and support volunteering by everyone irrespective of age, education, background, health or wealth. Volunteering is a way for all residents to get involved in their community.

For Carers Week, we had the pleasure of visiting our colleague Janet at Dorset County Hospital. A key part of Janet’s role is supporting unpaid carers - particularly those with loved ones in hospital - offering guidance, reassurance and a vital listening ear.

On this occasion, the Carers Café was buzzing, bringing together multi-agency support from Help & Care and Leonardo Carer Support. It was wonderful to see so many organisations united to provide practical help and connection for carers.

Janet shared: “I’ve always wanted to champion unpaid carers, and I’ve been doing so for the past 40 years. It’s important to honour the incredible role they play and support them in any way I can.”

This Carers Week is all about the challenges unpaid carers face, especially recognising their role and finding the support available.

If you care for someone who is an inpatient at Dorset County Hospital, you’re welcome to join the Carers Café every Wednesday, 2–4pm.

Janet and Julia are in The HIVE for tea, cake and a friendly chat. They can offer advice, share information, or simply listen.

Three years ago, Mick was introduced to the Green Space Team East, where he first met Giulia. From there, Giulia encouraged Mick to get involved with the Avon Heath Country Park Team, as well as the Friends of Uddens and Cannon Hill Woodlands, where they both continued to volunteer together.

Giulia is a passionate volunteer, also dedicating her time to Knoll Gardens and the South West Lakes Trust . As their friendship grew, Mick began joining Giulia at the Vocal Fun Community Choirs in Ferndown, strengthening their connection even further.

That friendship blossomed into something more, and on 22 May, Mick and Giulia tied the knot in a wonderful celebration. To mark the occasion, they recently gathered with the Avon Heath rangers and fellow volunteers for a special get-together.

A beautiful reminder that giving your time can bring people together in the most unexpected and meaningful ways. ❤️

Volunteers' Week Dorset Council

06/06/2026

Today we share a few words about volunteering from Cllr Nick Ireland, Leader of Dorset Council.

"This week is Volunteers’ Week, a chance to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who gives their time to support others and help keep our communities running.

Across Dorset, volunteers make a real difference. Many of our local services, groups and events rely on people stepping up, often quietly and behind the scenes. Whether it’s supporting vulnerable residents, helping at community activities or just being there for others, every contribution matters.

There’s no single way to volunteer. It might be something you do regularly, or just when you can. People get involved for all sorts of reasons; to give something back, meet others, or stay active. However much time you can offer, it all helps.

Volunteering goes right to the heart of our Communities for All priority, building places where people feel connected, supported and part of something.

If you already volunteer, thank you for everything you do. And if you’re thinking about it, there are plenty of ways to get involved.

Together, we help make Dorset a truly welcoming and supportive place to live.

If you’re interested in volunteering, you can explore opportunities on the Dorset Council website or through Volunteer Centre Dorset."
