When was the last time you sat with an idea that actually challenged how you think about doing good?

EAA’s Introduction to Effective Altruism Course is a free, 6-week program where a small group works through some of the biggest ideas in ethics, global health and the future of humanity.

It’s not a lecture series. It’s curated readings and honest conversation, the kind where you might change your mind about something important.

This EOFY, your donation can go twice as far - across some of the world’s most effective giving opportunities.

Until 30 June, Effective Altruism Australia is matching donations from new and returning donors after 12 months, up to $5,000 per donor, with matching available across global health and climate giving. That means your tax-deductible donation could help double the impact of proven interventions like malaria prevention, childhood vaccinations, vitamin A supplementation, direct cash transfers, and high-impact climate solutions.

One donation. Double the reach. Double the good.

Donate before 30 June. 👉 https://effectivealtruism.org.au/eofy/

This episode takes on one of the most uncomfortable questions in ethics: whether doing good should be led by emotion, popularity, proximity - or cold, hard impact. Bridget, Ray O’Leary and Grace Adams unpack why some causes attract attention while others remain invisible, whether social media has made giving more performative, and what happens when “helping everyone a little” means failing to help anyone enough.
From the famous “Repugnant Conclusion” thought experiment to the brutal logic of saving five strangers over one child you know, this conversation sits in the messy space between compassion and calculation.
Can maths tell us how to be moral?
Are we drawn to causes because they matter, or because they make us feel heroic?
And if impact were invisible, would we still care?

A provocative, funny and morally uncomfortable conversation about charity, sacrifice, suffering, and the impossible choices behind trying to do the most good.

As the end of the financial year approaches, your contribution can act as a vital stabilizer in an increasingly unstable global aid system. This year is about more than just fundraising; it is a critical window to secure essential health interventions, such as vitamin A supplements for children and insecticide-treated bed nets to prevent malaria. Effective Altruism Australia is aiming to raise $2.5 million by June 30 to ensure high-impact funding reaches those who need it most. Make a tax-deductible donation today to provide life-saving support where it can do the most good.

Australia’s renewable energy conversation often centres around solar, wind, and batteries.

But geothermal may be a far larger opportunity than many realise.

What does it actually mean to be a good person? One idea is that goodness involves caring beyond our immediate circle - not just the people close to us, but potentially animals too, since they can feel pain and suffering much like we do.

This opens up questions about the longer-term effects of our choices, and what we each add to the world. Though it’s a big ask - because we’re animals too, wired to put our families first.

So perhaps, the more interesting question isn’t whether we should care about all living things, but how we balance that against the very real need for close relationships and a stable life. Can we hold both without pretending the tension between them is easy?

In this episode of More Than Good, we sit down with some of the world’s most thoughtful minds on ethics, philanthropy, and human behaviour:

— one of the most influential moral philosophers of our time

— CEO of Effective Altruism Australia

Krystian Seibert — Executive Director, Policy and Sector Development at Philanthropy Australia and Chair of Mental Health First Aid International

Tse Yip Fai — researcher and PhD candidate on the intersection of AI and animal ethics

The debate over whether charitable giving is a personal choice or a moral obligation involves balancing philosophical duty with individual fulfillment.

While theories like utilitarianism suggest it is morally wrong to withhold help from sentient beings, strictly framing giving as an obligation can be discouraging. Instead, focusing on the “moral opportunity” allows individuals to view giving as a way to find purpose and add significant meaning to their own lives through positive impact.

Ultimately, encouraging people to seize the chance to do good is often more effective than labeling them as “bad” for not participating.
