A joint statement from the LGBTQ Staff Networks at DBTH and RDaSH.

Transgender day of remembrance (TDOR) falls on 20 November. Colleagues from Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) and our trust’s LGBTQ+ staff networks want to highlight the importance of this day and to share our solidarity to all who have been affected by loss and, or violence towards themselves, their family or their friends.

TDOR seeks to highlight the losses our community faces due to hatred and bigotry. Trans hate crime rose by 11% in 2023 in England and Wales and we will sadly likely see that further increase during 2024. At DBTH and our trust we do not accept any form of discrimination or abuse towards our trans colleagues or patients and actively support and pursue when this happened within our services.

The staff networks across both trusts are a safe place for our trans community to join and seek support from their community. We welcome new members along with trans allies joining us.

There are vigils to recognise lives lost being held in both Doncaster and Sheffield this evening:

6:30pm Utilitarian Church in Doncaster, DN1 3PB
5:30pm to 7:30pm Sheffield Winter Gardens, SAYiT event, S1 2LH.

❗️ Applications for the Changing the Record project are now closed ❗️

📣 We need your help! 📣

Have you ever wanted to find out more about our archive and museum collections? Do you fancy yourself as a history researcher? Now in its fourth year, our Changing the Record project is seeking community researchers to look at our collections through new eyes, uncovering the hidden stories from the LGBT community.

Doncaster will provide training and support to carry out the research. An honorarium of up to £300 will also be awarded to each researcher for expenses. For more information or to register your interest to find out more, just email [email protected] by the end of November.

The LGBTQ+ Staff Network is visiting UK Pride, hosted this year in our very Doncaster! If you're visiting, come see our stand in the Health Zone where our wonderful volunteers are raising money for the Hospital Charity. You can pick up pens, wristbands, flags, badges and keychains for a small and suggested charitable donation.

Thanks to Doncaster Pride for giving us the space to show that DBTH is proudly inclusive to everyone in our community. Have a great day everyone!

🏳️‍🌈 With over half of the LGBTQ+ community experiencing depression and three out of five of us struggling with anxiety, it’s important to recognise that help is out there.

🏳️‍⚧️ Gay Times has put together a list of resources for LGBTQ+ mental health. If you or someone you know is struggling, one or more of these options may be helpful.

🌈 With Pride Month on the way and Doncaster hosting UK Pride this year, it can often be forgotten that homophobia, transphobia and other LGBTQ+ struggles are still alive and well in 2024.

🤝 Look after yourselves and if you need help or just a chat, the LGBTQ+ Network is filled with other LGBTQ+ members, allies and colleagues to support you.

Mental health issues can sometimes feel impossible to overcome, so it’s important to know where you can find support as an LGBTQIA+ person.

👨‍⚕️ It's American activist, Phil Wilson!

📣 Wilson was an activist for gay rights and helped raise awareness of HIV/AIDS.

💪 Check out the slides we've put together on this influential gay man who passionately fought alongside his long term partner for gay rights and AIDS awareness believing his work was building a better future for the next generation!

👨‍⚕️ It's race car driver and pilot, Roberta Cowell!

🏎️ Roberta has always loved cars and engineering. Later, she also loved planes and was a fighter pilot in the Second World War. She also became the first in Britain to undergo a Vagioplasty (performed by Michael Dillon).

💪 Check out the slides we've put together on this determined trans woman/intersex individual who published her story publically with an autobiography.

🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ LGBTQ+ Hero of Medicine🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

👨‍⚕️ It's American biologist, Bruce Voeller!

🧪 Bruce’s sexuality was a key inspiration to his love of biology. He was at the forefront of the AIDS pandemic and was the one who said GRID (Gay Related Imunne Deficiency) was an inaccurate and stigmatizing term. He therefore suggested the term, AIDS.

💪 Check out the slides we've put together on this determined trans man who completely changed TB detection - and we still detect/diagnose TB this way today!
