21 September 1795 – Remembering the Battle of the Diamond

Today marks the anniversary of the Battle of the Diamond, which took place on 21 September 1795 near Loughgall, County Armagh.

The confrontation came amid a period of significant sectarian tension and violence in the area, and its aftermath would have a lasting impact on the history of Ulster.

The events of that day ultimately led to the formation of the Orange Institution in 1795, with the first Orange Lodge warrants issued later that year.

For 231 years, the Orange Institution has been part of the story of our communities — preserving our traditions, heritage and Protestant culture, while continuing to play an important role in community life across Ulster and beyond.

On this anniversary, we remember the events of 21 September 1795 and the history from which our Institution was born.

Remembering our history. Preserving our heritage.

Today 1st September we marked Orange Victims Day, a day when we as an Orange Family come together to remember our Orange Brethren that lost their lives in the period of Northern Irelands history known as ‘The Troubles’. Throughout ‘The Troubles’ 343 Orangemen and one Orangewomen were murdered by terrorists, with the majority of orange victims being murdered whilst serving as members of the security forces.

Members of the lodge along with family members, members of LOL 241 and LOL 836 Bro Henry Ferguson Memorial Donaghadee attended Bro McDonald's grave this evening to pay their respect. We remember Bro. Sergeant William Robert McDonald(29) who was Married and had 2 Children. He was killed in the ex*****on of his duties as a member of the R.U.C.

Special thanks to Bro J Creighton of Donaghadee Blue Banner JLOL 781 who played Abide with me during the short service.

The lodge had one noticeable member missing from our ranks for the twelfth parade on Monday. Bro John Ferris who is currently over in Canada. Although he was still able to join us in the celebrations. We hope that you have a great time away and we will see you soon.

Another fantastic day for our lodge in Donaghadee and Ballywalter. It was a pleasure to parade on the morning around Donaghadee and parading under our new arch for the first time on the twelfth. We also welcomed 3 members of LOL 30 in Scotland who accompanied us around Donaghadee. Ballywalter was also great with a fantastic crowd out watching the parade.

A special mention to our junior lodge Donaghadee Blue Banner JLOL 781 who were well turned out and had an enjoyable day. It was also great to see some of them helping out with carrying our banner.
