The challenge is to imagine what a sitting may have been like using only a single painting as reference. In a contemporary sitting, I usually distil what I see. I use only those fragments which interest me and lose the rest. But in someone else's painting, this has already been done by the artist. And I end up actually adding imagined elements to my painting - creases, shadows, veins, pupils, highlights - as if the sitter was in the room. Hopefully familiar. Hopefully unfamiliar.
