What a weekend 2nd Dollar Scouts and Wee County Explorers had at the Subzero Camp at the Auchengillan Outdoor Centre. It certainly lived up to its name with temperatures down to -6 on the Friday night and tent collapsing volumes of snow on the Saturday night. Great fun 😁

Sometimes in the fun and mayhem of our usual weekly meetings I forget just how proud I am to be a Leader in the Scout Group, but this morning's turn out at the wettest remembrance service that I can remember brought that pride back into clear focus.
From Zoe who read out Binyon's tryst, Katryna and Isaac who laid the wreaths, our flag bearers Luke, Ian, Noah, Campbell, Hamish and Harry and all the rest who turned out to pay your respects, you're each a credit to yourselves, to the Group and to Scouting. Many from the Dollar community who organised and attended the service today took the time to congratulate me afterwards on the respect and dedication shown by our Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers. Well done all and I hope the rest of your Sunday is a good bit warmer and drier.
We will remember them.

Once an Olympic sport, tug of war requires strength, fitness and determination. So if that sounds like you (or you just want to have some fun), get together with your friends and form a team. Email your team name, which category and list of team members to [email protected]
Things you need to know: -
• The Dollar Gala is on Saturday the 7th of June, 1-4pm at the field behind the Hive in Dollar.
• Payment for your entry into the tug-of-war can be made at the Wee Country Explorers stall (come and find us in the field)
• Entries for the tug-of-war will close at 2pm on Saturday.
• Exact timings for the event will depend on the number of entries. Listen out for announcements on the day.
• No studded footwear allowed! Gloves and a safety anchor will be provided for the younger teams (Squirrels, Beavers and Cubs).
• Apart from our own take on the make up of the teams and some safety provisions for the younger contestants, we’ll be applying the Scottish Highland Games Association rules for tug-of-war.

For those who don't live in Dollar and therefore might not get to see the Dollar News, here's a scan of our article that's been published in the May edition. I missed the November edition, so this article summarises all that we've been up to since May 2024.

What a great camp. Despite some planning challenges and torrential rain on both Friday and Saturday night we pulled it off! It just goes to show what can be achieved with the right kit, a positive attitude and your team around you.
The camp statistics speak for themselves: -
6 sacks of small dry chopped logs for our 3 pizza ovens. Many thanks again to Donald Ferguson our nonagenarian supplier of chopped logs and kindling.
1 large trailer load of large logs. Many thanks to the Campbells for the logs, the Wednesday Scouts and Stephen for loading the logs and to Jonathan Bacon for the loan of his trailer.
1 very full car load of food. Many thanks to Rachel Macnamara for the shopping.
1 large trailer load with all the tents and camping kit (we pretty much emptied the hall). Many thanks again to Keith Carman for the use of the trailer.
1 District Lead Volunteer to sign off on the camp risk assessment and plans. Thanks George.
85 young people from ages 4 to 16 (2 Young Leaders, 6 Explorers, 24 Scouts, 29 Cubs, 14 Beavers and 10 Squirrels) - none of our current Leaders can remember ever having this many at camp before! Well done to all those who were joining us to camp for the first time.
6 Leaders, 2 2nd Dollar Board Trustees, 1 (not so retired) retired Leader, 1 overnight parent helper and 13 daytime parent helpers. Many thanks to all who helped make the camp a success, but special thanks to Graham Silk and Jane Scott for stepping in at short notice.
1 unexpected visitor. It was lovely to see you at camp again Andy Robertson.
70 pizzas made on site and cooked on our 3 pizza ovens. 24 litres of apple and pear crumble, made on site and cooked in dutch ovens on the camp fire. 140 breakfast rolls filled with an assortment of bacon, lorne sausage, egg and black pudding cooked on the fire and on the pizza ovens. 130 bananas, 115 apples and 60 satsumas. Plus, loads of other food. Thanks to all who helped prepare and cook it.
7 vintage Blacks of Greenock patrol tents, 6 hammocks, 5 dining shelters, 3 kitchen dome tents, 5 large Cub tents, 8 Leaders tents and 1 Young Leaders tent.
1 Sunday squad of helpers at the Scout Hall to hang the tents to dry and was hall the pots, etc. Many thanks to all who came along and made short work of it all.
1 team, working together to make it all happen and to make it all such fun.

Many thanks to Helen and Jude from Sustainable Dollar for hosting the Cubs tonight at the Harviestoun Community garden.
It was a lovely evening with the Cubs helping to sew the wildflower meadow, learning about the local eco system with a game of bat-and-moth and then a mini-beast survey.
We hope this is the start of a longer term relationship with Sustainable Dollar as the Cubs work towards some of the most challenging badges (challenging because they require a commitment over quite a sustained period of time).
- Cubs Environmental Conservation Activity Badge: with a group of other people look after a piece of land or a garden
- Cubs Gardener Activity Badge: Help to look after and grow at least one item in a garden or allotment for two months. Understand what mini beasts are and why they are good for our gardens and outdoor spaces.
- Community Impact Staged Activity Badge: Take action over three months. You should spend at least four hours personally taking action on your chosen issue and involve others in the action. Work in a team with your section and preferably people in the community you are trying to help.

Many thanks to Steve Wands and Cam Glasgow from the Dollar Accies RFC & Friends for Doddie team who came in to speak with the Scouts and Explorers tonight about fundraising and leadership. So what does it take for a team to raise over £30,000 by cycling over 700 miles around Scotland and contributing to an overall sum of nearly £1million raised by Doddie Aid in 2025? Being prepared, humility, supporting each other, relying on each others strengths and cheerfulness in the face of adversity were the main points that stood out for me. Unsurprisingly, these attributes all relate to what we do in scouting and we had a good chat about how the Scouts and Explorers can apply them at our upcoming camp.
The Explorers were thanked for the near £500 they raised from their Burns Suppers extravaganzas back in January. The talk was great inspiration for the Explorers whose next fund raising activity will be running a rugby based obstacle course and running the tug-o-war competition at the Dollar Gala on the 7th of June. Again, all the funds raised by the Explorers at the Gala will go towards the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation, so we look forward to your continued support.

Well done to the scouts and leaders who attended the tree planting tonight at the community woodland in Muckhart. We managed to plant out what will become a nice wee thicket of 35 trees consisting of; beech, hawthorn, laburnum, horse chestnut, willow, birch, norway maple and oak.
Thanks also to Tim the landowner for giving us permission to plant and for pre-preparing the plot.

I was delighted earlier this evening to be able to award the Wee County Explorer Scout Unit with their My Name'5 Doddie Foundation tartan neckies.
Having closed during Covid, the Wee County Explorer Explorer Scout Unit was re-established in Dollar in August 2024. The re-established unit were looking for ways to form a new identity and to find an action or challenge that would galvanise them as a team. We struck on the idea of supporting the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation and thanks to the support of Mia at the foundation and the Wier family, we've been granted permission to wear the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation tartan neckies.
To date the Explorer's have raised nearly £500 by putting on a series of Burns Suppers for more than 100 hungry Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. This money was donated to the Dollar Accies RFC & Friends for Doddie team who completed the Doddie Aid cycle event. The Explorers have more fund raising ideas planned for the Dollar Gala in June.
Many thanks to Brian at www.thecyclejersey.com/ for printing the neckies. Thanks also to Sheila and Helen for sewing the hems on the neckies (as they come as 4 neckies printed on a sheet).
