Stop number three of Friday was the Battle of Britain Bunker at Uxbridge. A fantastic museum, so much to see and a great place for lunch too. A must visit for everyone.

Next stop on Friday after the mini Mohne Dam was the wonderful Bentley Priory Museum. Last time I was here was in October 2010, after the RAF left and before the museum opened. The history surrounding the place is unreal and freedoms we enjoy today can trace their roots back to this building and Sir Hugh Dowding.

Just outside Watford, off the M25 is this wonderful, but overgrown relic from WW2. Top Secret at the time, it is a scale replica of The Mohne Dam. Used by Barnes Wallis in the design and testing of the Upkeep Mine, better known as ‘The Bouncing Bomb’. Lancasters of 617 Squadron ‘Dambusters’, led by Guy Gibson attacked the great dams of the argue Valley on the night of 16-17 May 1943.

The calm after the rain, as many people know Thorpe Abbotts airfield is very local to me and it’s always been a special place for me since my first visit back in March 2004. The airfield is silent and peaceful now and you are easily lost in the atmosphere of the place while walking in the footsteps of heroes.

One of the last remaining structures of an airfield that’s been erased. Aside from the superb museum there are a number of memorials so the history is not forgotten. This blast shelter is one of three that are still known of at the former RAF Burtonwood.
