Habibti Liverpool will be at this lovely community event at the Palm House in Sefton Park on Sunday 1st November from 12-4pm. This event is a showcase event for partnership working supported by Kindred Liverpool City Region Merseyside Yemeni Community Association and Kuumba Imani

The event is family friendly ❤️

We won't be selling pre-loved stuff (sorry to our followers who want us to bring stuff!). but we will be talking about the work of the Habibti Liverpool charity in Yemen, the healthcare workers and families we support, and how you can help.

Get it in your diary, there will be Yemeni food on sale at this event, so make sure you bring your appetite with you!

Habibti Liverpool will be at this lovely community event which has been brought together through partnerships between the local Yemeni community, Blast and Kindred Liverpool City Region, Merseyside Yemeni Community Association and Kuumba Imani

To answer the first question that people have asked when we've told them about us being there.... "no, we won't be selling pre-loved items at the event in the Palm House, we're sorry" The Habibti crew will be there at the event, talking about the work of Habibti Liverpool in Yemen, the Yemeni healthcare workers and families we support at 4 hospitals in Sana'a and what you can do to support.

And with the money that we make from selling the merchandise (which has been funded by Kindred) we will be creating a culture walk based around Yemeni food outlets on Lodge Lane - we'll be gathering names at the event for the culture walk, which will take place in 2027.

In Sana'a in Yemen, the nursing and healthcare teams which you support through Habibti Liverpool have had a phenomenally busy few days. The biggest issue the teams are seeing is still widespread and profound malnutrition.

Over a period of 4 days at Al-Kuwait Hospital, the team treated over 1200 babies and children at their specially organised event.... This is the second year that they have done this major charitable event where families who are completely unable to pay for medical consultations are seen for free. Some families were provided with free medication, and children with cardiac conditions were able to get a free echocardiogram.

Families were queueing up outside, inside and on corridors....

The teams covered all areas of paediatric care; endocrine, gastrointestinal, blood disorders, neurological, cardiac, and respiratory.

Every time you donate to Habibti Liverpool, you are supporting families like this with 100% of your donation being used to pay expenses for specialist nurses who do not receive salary, pay for medicines and tests, and sometimes equipment.

We are always looking for people who can support Habibti with monthly donations, as it allows for staff to come to work with their expenses covered, meaning there is a more reliable service for patients. Could you be a monthly donor?

So what's this Charity Harvest Auction event all about then?

Well.... first thing to know is that you'd be surprised at how much fun can be had in a room of people who are bidding like mad on a bunch of home-grown L8 grapes or a beautifully lush chilli plant, or a mega-jar of plum jam or some special melon seeds from the West Bank....

Every year for 11 years, Squash Liverpool has gathered the very best of the locally grown veg, fruit and conserves - and honey and chocolate and... - to raise money for charity.

This year the money raised from the auction will support Squash's 'Soup it Forward' programme which means anyone who needs a free, freshly cooked soup and bread can come and get one.... and us, Habibti_Liverpool who support the treatment of babies, children and Mums at 4 public hospitals in Sana'a, Yemen and Kuumba Imani Millenium Centre for their Leaky Roof Fund.

It's free to come along, the event starts at 5pm on Wednesday 23rd September with the actual auction starting at 6pm, finishes by 9pm.

Things have been feeling heavy; so much effort being put into creating division and so much inflammatory language and rhetoric. It can be easy to fall into despair.

Then you go on the L8 Inter Faith walk and you find yourself lifted.

5 hours spent with over 200 people of all faiths and none.... starting at St Philip Neri Catholic Church, moving onto St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, then into Princes Road Orthodox Synagogue and on to Al- Rahma Mosque.... followed by food in the mosque café.

Participants were invited to be curious, to ask questions, to speak to people they don't know, and to be respectful when in other people's spiritual and religious homes. And that's what is so refreshing, everyone does ask questions, everyone is interested in knowing more about each other's way of believing, practising, and each other's histories in this great city of ours.

In these times of division, we must remember that this is Liverpool, a truly great city and we owe it to ALL of those who came before us to find ways of speaking respectfully towards each other, to find solutions to complex issues, and to move forward - together.

At one point on the Interfaith Walk, we were standing outside on the street as it was so packed and warm inside the church. There was a man with a glass of b**r - really quite drunk - outside with a couple of Police officers. When the man saw us, he came over and started talking to us, the Police started to move him away, but we said it was fine and carried on talking to him.

The man had tears streaming down his face, and he was telling us about his life in L8. He was apologising for getting so upset, but he just said,

"I love it here, I just love it. To see all of you here and to know that we can all live together like this is the best feeling, and I just don't want that to change. I love it here"

Not a headline moment, but it means the world.

Let us tell you a story: a story of love.

A married couple - both paediatric doctors - come from Yemen to study at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. They make lasting friendships with colleagues who become friends. The doctors are Dr. Najla Al-Sonboli and Dr. Nasher Al-Aghbari. They return to their work in Sana'a, the Yemeni capital.

War starts in Yemen in 2015, with an immediate impact on healthcare facilities. As the war continues, salaries for people working in the public sector - doctors, nurses, teachers, cleaners, transportation staff, among others - stop. Very quickly, people with the ability to leave, leave the country. Those who remain suffer increasingly from lack of accessible food supplies, access to drinkable water, and other basic necessities.

Dr. Najla and Dr. Nasher were offered opportunities to leave Yemen and work in safer locations. They decide that they will remain in Yemen and work with the babies, children, and parents in their care. Dr. Najla declares that she has to stay, as without her as the then lead at Al-Sabeen Maternal Hospital, as otherwise nobody else will stay.

Meanwhile, in Liverpool, Najla and Nasher's friends and colleagues begin to raise funds to support the work at Al-Sabeen Maternal Hospital. It is small amounts that achieve a lot; purchasing small pieces of equipment, medication for patients, paying for travel expenses for staff to get to work on a bus....

11 years later and.... there's still a group of supportive citizens here in Liverpool (and across the UK and worldwide) supporting the work of healthcare workers in now 3 public hospitals in Sana'a in Yemen. 100% of the money we send is used to support now 40 healthcare workers every month, pay for medications, investigations, and sometimes equipment. Every month, your support saves lives.

The clinical decisions about who is supported are made by qualified professionals in Yemen.The truth is that over 95% of patients and their families at the 3 hospitals are unable to pay for treatment.

The book above is a collection of verbatim accounts of survivors of the war in Yemen. It is devastating.

Those who know, know this kind of work depends on love.

Habibti Liverpool are so, so sad to hear of the death of Hanin Odeh; beloved daughter, sister of Dr Hamza Odeh, and sister in law of Dr. Nour Essale.

Hanin was an engineer and fashion designer from Jordan, of Palestinian heritage, and her passing has shocked many.

Hanin kindly donated some beautiful designs of hers for our fashion show, nearly 2 years ago, and her family met some of our trustees in Jordan around the same time. Thank you Hanin ❤️
