In this episode of Rewrite the Story, we sit down with Jimbo McCallion, who is now 25 years in recovery. By sharing his story, Jimbo hopes to inspire others who may be struggling and to show that recovery is possible, no matter how hopeless things may seem.

Once known as a 'street drinker' on the streets of Derry, Jimbo has not only rewritten his story, he has now written it down. His recently released memoir shares an honest account of addiction, recovery, and the hope that change is possible.

Together, we talk about the pain, struggles, and lowest points of addiction, but also the rebuilding process that follows. From family life and personal challenges to achievements, purpose, and success in recovery, Jimbo reflects on the journey that has brought him to where he is today.

This is a powerful conversation about resilience, hope, and the courage to rewrite your story.

ARC Fitness was delighted to welcome Mike Farrar, Permanent Secretary of the Department of Health NI, to its HQ yesterday to learn more about the organisation's innovative approach to addiction recovery.

During the visit, Mr Farrar met with staff, participants and partners to hear first-hand about the positive impact ARC Fitness is having on individuals and families impacted by addiction and substance use.

The visit comes at a significant time for the organisation, which is currently undergoing an independent evaluation by PHIRST Light, a (National Institute for Health and Care Research) from the University of Nottingham. The research is being undertaken in partnership with a range of organisations including the Public Health Agency (PHA), Western Health and Social Care Trust, DePaul, ARC Healthy Living Centre, the Police Service of Northern Ireland and local GP Federations.

"I started drinking when I was 16-and-a-half, and from that day I was drunk."
Fast forward 12 months and Jimbo McCallion was on a life support machine in a coma for almost a month after being hit by a car in an accident he couldn't even remember.
He continued to drink until one day in 2001, when the death of his friend changed everything.
"That’s the day I died too,” he told us. "The drink killed him. He was sipping through a straw in the end because he couldn’t give it up. It was also the day I took my last drink.”
Now he has opened up on his story, how it ripped his family apart, and how he has turned his life around.

We are delighted to be working in collaboration with the men’s and women’s teams at Derry City FC as we continue to promote recovery, wellbeing, and positive mental health across our community.

Partnerships like this help us spread awareness, break down stigma, and show that recovery is possible for everyone. Sport has the power to bring people together, inspire hope, and create conversations that can change lives, which is exactly what we do at ARC Fitness.

A huge thank you to everyone at Derry City FC for their warm welcome and support. We look forward to working together and building a stronger, healthier community both on and off the pitch.
