Giles Doherty was laid to rest today. So many have recognised this wonderful man's kindness, compassion, warmth and talent in recent days, including Richard Moore.

Giles and Richard's stories were interwoven for nearly 60 years. He taught Richard music in Rosemount Primary School, and was the teacher who found him just after he was shot. Here they are photographed together just a few years ago.

Our sincere condolences go out Giles' family and friends. His was a life beautifully lived and he will be deeply missed. RIP.

We’re thrilled to be delivering Year 2 of our Global Citizenship Education Department’s cross-community project, “Taking the Next Step”, in partnership with Rural Area Partnership Incorporated and the Verbal Arts Centre. This transition programme supports P7 pupils as they get ready to move on to post-primary school. This year, we explored the theme “Different, Similar, Together – Diversity and Inclusion” through fun, creative, and interactive activities.

A huge well done to the fantastic pupils from Cumber Claudy Primary School who brought kindness, energy, and great ideas to the session last week!

Congratulations to our Founder and Chief Executive, Richard Moore, on this wonderful accolade from Rosemount Primary and Nursery School.- his old school.

It's well known that Richard's life changed forever as he walked home from Rosemount on 4th May 1972, and we know well that it means a great deal to Richard to be made the school's new ambassador.

No doubt he will give his all to support a school that gave him so much support and care, especially after he was blinded.

We are excited for this new chapter in the story of Richard and Rosemount.

Richard Moore, Children in Crossfire founder and former Rosemount Primary School pupil was bestowed with the honour of ‘School Ambassador’ as he gave the Inaugural Children in Crossfire Peacebuilding Lecture ‘Forgive Me If I Forgive You’ recently.

💛 A MOMENT FROM OUR HISTORY 💛

Today, we’re looking back at a defining chapter in Children in Crossfire’s story.
In 2001–2002, a devastating famine struck Malawi. Crop failure, unpredictable weather and poor planning led to the most severe food crisis the country had faced in decades.

Moved by what we saw on TV, we took action. Alongside The Irish News, we launched an emergency public appeal to raise £1 million. Thanks to an incredible outpouring of generosity, the target was exceeded - and the funds raised helped save countless lives.

We share this not just to reminisce, but as a reminder of the power of kindness. In a world that can often feel cynical and harsh, compassion continues to sustain our work.

Thank you to everyone who has stood with us over the years 💛

We’re grateful to see Tom Kelly and the Irish News highlight the story of our CEO & founder, Richard Moore

Richard’s life has always been about more than his own experience - it’s about what can grow from it: compassion, forgiveness and a determination to create opportunities for children affected by poverty and conflict.

His story continues to inspire hope in what’s possible, even in the most challenging circumstances.

FORGIVE ME IF I FORGIVE YOU
The inaugural Children in Crossfire peacebuilding lecture

📍 Rosemount Primary and Nursery School.
🗓️ May 4th 2026 | 7.30pm

On Thursday the 4th of May 1972 ten-year-old Richard Moore was blinded by a rubber bullet on his way home from Rosemount Primary School. In January 2006 Richard met Charles, the soldier who fired that rubber bullet. The two went on to become friends, and Richard forgave Charles for what he had done to him.

In one sense that was the point of arrival for Richard’s story; in a broader sense it was a point of departure – a new beginning.

Why did Richard forgive the man who hurt him, and what does he mean by forgiveness? He describes forgiveness as ‘ a gift that he gave to himself’, but what have the actual benefits of that gift been in his life?

In FORGIVE ME IF I FORGIVE YOU, the inaugural peacebuilding lecture of Children in Crossfire’s new peacebuilding department, Richard will tell the story of what happened to him one day running home from school, and how the events of that day changed not only his life but his attitude to life. The lecture takes place this May the 4th, the 54th anniversary of the day in question, in Rosemount Primary School – the last place that Richard ever saw.

The evening will begin with a song from the school choir, and conclude with a Q&A with Richard, in the company of Damian Gorman – Children in Crossfire’s new Head of Peacebuilding.

Admission is free, but places are limited. To secure yours please contact the school at

Over the coming weeks and months, we’ll be sharing stories from 30 years of Children in Crossfire - three decades of compassion and change.

While we were founded in 1996, our story began much earlier.

On 4th May 1972, 10-year-old Richard Moore was walking home from school when his life changed forever. A rubber bullet, fired from just ten feet away, left him blind for life.

What followed is not a story of tragedy, but one of extraordinary courage, resilience and compassion.

With the love of his family and the support of his community, Richard returned to school, went on to university, built a successful career, became an accomplished musician, and created a loving family life. He leads a full and deeply purposeful life.

Remarkably, Richard never carried bitterness. Instead, he chose forgiveness.

In 2006, he met Charles - the soldier responsible. From that meeting grew a close and lasting friendship that continues to this day. As Richard often says, “I have learned to see life in a different way.”

Inspired by the kindness he received at his most vulnerable, Richard founded Children in Crossfire in 1996 - determined to turn his experience into something positive.

What began with one child’s story has, over 30 years, grown into an organisation transforming the lives of thousands of children affected by poverty and injustice around the world.

To everyone who has supported us - whether from the beginning or more recently - thank you.

Together, we will continue to show compassion and deliver change.

Good luck to our incredible Paris Marathon runners! 🏃‍♂️🇫🇷

This weekend, a group of amazing supporters will take on the Schneider Electric Paris Marathon - one of the most iconic races in the world. Covering 26.2 miles through the heart of Paris, they’ll pass famous landmarks and push themselves to the limit in an unforgettable challenge.

We are so proud of each and every runner for their commitment, determination, and passion. By taking on this marathon, they are raising vital funds that will help Children in Crossfire continue our work supporting some of the world’s most vulnerable children in Ethiopia and Tanzania.

To all our runners: thank you for going the extra mile (literally!) to make a difference. We’ll be cheering you on every step of the way! 👏💙
