Jürgen Simpson

Jürgen Simpson is a composer and performer exploring the intersection of sound, technology, and movement. Spanning fixed media, installation, theatre, and live performance, his work is rooted in the vocabulary and potential of electronic sound and process. His compositions for film have been presented at MoMA (New York), Tate Liverpool, and Galerie Nichido (Tokyo), and his work has been commissioned by Almeida Ensemble, National Chamber Choir Ireland, Crash Ensemble, RTÉ and Turning Point Ensemble. He has composed three operas, including the Genesis Opera Prize-winning Thwaite (2004) and Air India [redacted] (Vancouver, 2015).
Recent live work centres on modular synthesis and live coding with performances at Beta Festival, New Music Dublin, ICLC Barcelona, and Body and Soul. His work in the field of dance includes collaborations with the Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company, Angie Smalis, Irish Modern Dance Company and Mary Wycherley for whom he has scored numerous works including the live-coded score for hybrid dance film Weathering.
A decade-long member of Dublin rock band The Jimmy Cake, he produced their acclaimed 2008 album Spectre and Crown. His sound installations have featured at the Venice Architectural Biennale and most recently he created the sonification for Fiona McDonnell's 2026 exhibition Inhale/Exhale at RHA Dublin.
Based at the University of Limerick, Simpson has collaborated widely including Michael Nyman, Fergus Kelly, Kevin Volans and Ian Wilson. He co-founded Light Moves Festival of Screendance in 2014 and is co-curator of Open Futures residency programme. He has commissioned new live electronic music works by artists such as Natalie Beridze, Beatrice Dillon, and Dublin Modular. He is a member of the Programme Advisory Panel at Limerick City Gallery of Art.
