Regular exercise is vital for children's brain development. By increasing blood and oxygen flow, grey matter is increased leading to improved memory, mood and attention. Aerobic exercise has been shown to increase the physical volume of the key structures in the brain (hippocampus and basal ganglia) that are responsible for memory formation, retention and executive function - movement helps children sharpen their focus, lengthen their attention spans and enhance their ability to resist impulses.
Physical activity releases neurotransmitters like serotonin and endorphins which relieve anxiety and regulate emotions, improve sleep - all of which set a better foundations for learning.

I realised I've never really introduced myself on here!
I'm Leah, I'm a strength & conditioning coach and a mum of 3. I've never considered myself as particularly sporty, but I've always loved being active and trying new things. With 3 kids aged between 7 and 13, I've gone through a fair amount of kids clubs and hobbies.
As a family we had horses and did all the horse riding activities you can think of...all my children were riding before they could walk and trotting round dressage arenas and jumping courses before they were potty trained. As they got older they began to find their own interests and I'm happy they're able to throw themselves into any kind of sport with confidence. My personal passion is the outdoors and that is a broad spectrum - anything from hiking and running, mountain biking, swimming, triathlon and now flat water kayaking I'm there and I'm in my happy place and this is something I'm keen to pass on to my children and those that I coach.
So when it comes to coaching kids, I started a few years ago but really only recently wanted to set up some more structured sessions to help youngsters develop the skills to be able to take on whatever sport, hobby or adventure they wish.

Solid movement and a good base strength and awareness is at the heart of everything we do and is what you'll find in my groups - but we do it through play and through games. The most important thing to me is that children feel confident to try and that they're heard and seen.
Over the last 13/14 years I've been on the side lines of so many clubs - swimming lessons, football tots, karate, pony club, rugby, basketball, netball, running and athletics, gymnastics, dance, cheerleading and now kayaking - I've seen and learnt so much and it lights up a passion in me to see children and young people taking part in their sports and hobbies and doing their best, showing up and enjoying the progress. It never fails to amaze me how adaptable they are and what they can achieve.
If you're interested in more info or if you think your child would benefit from some small group strength and conditioning sessions then please get in touch for a chat 😊

"I didn't used to be able to do this before we started the kettlebell club! Now I can reach the floor with my heels"

The downward dog pose is great for strength, flexibility, can help to balance out a hunched over posture and can even help alleviate stress and tension.

Lots of us find this hard, kids will struggle if they've got a lack of mobility in their calves and hamstrings, overall strength and stability in the wrists and shoulders play a huge part in being able to hold the pose for any prolonged periods of time.

Simple progression = all round better performance and self confidence.

Last Friday was the final session of the first ever kettlebells kids club. I cannot express how proud I am of these guys (and a few more who couldn't make it last week - you know who you are and I've not forgotten about you!)
I've thrown all sorts at them over the last few weeks and we've steadily chipped through tonnes of new skills and techniques which everyone has taken on with brilliant enthusiasm and attitude. Each week has been an opportunity to practice and each week everyone has improved.

For our last session I went out on a limb and asked them all to come up with their own short flow/circuit based on some of their favourite exercises that we've learned. First of all I was blown away by how much they could remember and bring back with such skill!
Then in small groups they put those exercises together, some even coming with their own spin on things and pushing themselves that bit further. We were then able to link everything up to make one giant flow that combined all of the kids ideas and favourites together and it worked really well!
One of my favourite sessions ever, I was and still am buzzing! And of course we finished off with some fun races and Easter eggs!

Kettlebells for kids will be returning next half term on 17th April so please get in touch to book in now!

We are really lucky to have a decent home gym set up and it's always an open door policy for the kids - they almost always come up with something crazy! The most important thing is that they're having fun with exercise, building confidence in their movement and ability to use their bodies. We started with a more structured circuit style workout because I wanted to get some stuff done and then whilst I did my own thing they slowly took over the place with the obstacle course 😆

Strong kids have more fun. Our kettlebells club is designed to help kids grow. I want them to develop into people who are confident to take on any challenge, any adventure, overcome any obstacle.
I also want them to be the kids who see a tree and can't help but want to climb it.

In a world that's changed so much, children are more sedentary than ever before and their future will only continue that way. Encouraging them to be active, to enjoy exercise and learn to use their bodies for fun and adventure now will undoubtedly help them grow up to be adults that are healthy and able to enjoy life to the fullest.

Kids Kettlebell club is coming on Friday 27th Feb!

I love kettlebell training and I hope I can encourage the younger generation to enjoy it just as much 🤞🏻

This is all about helping kids grow in confidence as well as strength and ability. I want those kids who don't see themselves as sporty, who aren't always picked for the A team, who haven't yet found their 'thing' to feel part of something really cool.
This is new, and I'm so up for it.

There are a few spaces left for this half term so get in touch if you want your child to try it - 4.30-5.15 Fridays, at The Studio Martial Arts centre in Dereham
