Andre’s legacy. ❤️

After losing her son Andre to young-onset FTD at just 24, Sam wanted to find a way to keep his memory alive and to give other families something she knows became so precious to her own family: memories.

Sam has created a CIC, Andre's Moments That Matter CIC with the aim of helping families affected by young-onset dementia make memories together.

Whether that’s helping someone fulfil a lifelong dream, creating a special day with their loved one, or simply connecting families who understand what they’re going through - Sam wants to build a community where nobody feels quite so alone. 💞

Because when Sam and her family knew they had such a short amount of time with Andre, they had to cram a lifetime of memories into it.

And now she wants to help other families create their own moments that matter.

The CIC raised over £1,500 at the official launch day - and this is just the beginning. ❤️

“When you heard dementia, what did you think?”

For Sam, before Andre’s diagnosis, dementia was something she associated with older people. Having worked in care homes and seen people in their 70s and 80s living with dementia, the thought that her son could have it at just 22 was completely unimaginable.

So when they were given Andre’s diagnosis, the initial reaction was disbelief: he’s too young to have dementia. 💔

And I understood that disbelief.

When my own mum was diagnosed with dementia at 65, my first thought was exactly the same: she’s too young.

But learning more about frontotemporal dementia (FTD) opened my eyes to just how many younger people can be affected - including people in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s.

So why, when we hear the word dementia, do most of us still picture an older person?

I believe it’s down to the total lack of awareness!

“You do grieve while they’re still alive” 💔

In tomorrow’s episode, Sam Fairbairn shares the heartbreaking story of her son, Andre, who was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) at just 22 and passed away at 24.

Sam talks about anticipatory grief - the grief that comes with losing parts of someone you love while they’re still here.

When Andre stopped talking, Sam had to face the realisation that she would never hear him say “I love you, Mum” again.

Sam is now trying to get support for the grief she’s been left carrying. She’s been waiting for around four months for counselling and it’s just not good enough. ❤️‍🩹
