Dereham Walkers are Welcome

Dereham Walkers are Welcome We are a not for profit organisation; we organise regular walks led by a local guide and we publish guides to local walks on our website.

Please feel free to come to any of our walks and join a friendly group of walkers. Or contact us to lead a walk There are many places to walk in Dereham. Some are public streets, some are parks and open spaces. Dereham has 41 public rights of way - paths and tracks which everyone can use by right. Our aims are:
Promoting Dereham as a good location for recreational walking for the benefit of local

residents, visitors and the tourism economy;
Working to improve access for the purpose of the enjoyment of the local countryside and facilities for all;
Monitoring Public Rights of Way (PRoW) within the Dereham Parish boundary to resolve issues early;
Working to maintain and improve facilities for walkers including, but not restricted to, PRoW and public transport;
Publicising local PRoW and other walking routes; maintaining membership of the National WaW Network to promote it and Dereham WaW. We lead walking groups on various longer and shorter trails; we help to keep footpaths clear and accessible, and we publish maps and guides to walks in and around Dereham varying from short walks up to 6 or 7 miles. Find these on our website.

STOP PRESS - NEW EVENING WALK

Saturday 20 June 2026, we have an evening walk above and across Rushmeadow.
We’re hoping for a nice evening for this gentle 3¼ mile walk.
To join, meet at 18:00 outside Church House (bottom of Church Street).
For those who want to stay in Dereham at the end, we we’re thinking of going just up the road to The Romany Rye for a drink or a meal but we've since realised that there are two World Cup football matches on that evening so pubs maybe very busy and noisy so we might have to decide on the night.

Last Friday’s walk was more around the town than some, though we did still leave the pavements behind for some of it. From Church Street, we took urban paths and roads to Fleece Meadow, then out along Norwich Road and Greenfields Road, and through to Greens Road industrial estate. Crossing the railway twice and negotiating the Tesco roundabout (where several kind drivers allowed us across in front of them), brought us to Yaxham Road and the former Jolly Farmers - and the path back across the railway for a final time. Continuing in this direction, we crossed Westfield Road and Shipdham Road to the public footpath and cyclepath under the A47. At South Green, we turned down Gilpin’s Ride and then Lineside. At the junction with Footpath 14 (at the corner of the school field) it was disappointing to see substantial fly tipping, though we hope to be able to have this collected by Breckland District Council. Now on the home straight, we followed the recently cleared path adjacent to the school fence, to reach Rolling Pin Lane and so back to Church Street.

Phil and Ken in the photo are clarifying the route.

17 walkers set out on our ‘bus walk’ to North Elmham - making up a very clear majority of passengers on the 21 Konect bus from Dereham. We were dropped off as planned at the former railway station in Elmham to begin our walk back. After a busy bit of main road, we joined the minor road (a yellow road for those who enjoy looking at OS maps) from Worthing to Hoe, happily encountering few cars (and one cyclist). Along this stretch, a very persistent cuckoo was clearly heard, making a first for many in the group, and a welcome sound to the rest of us. We took a pause at the entrance to the path towards Hoe Rough and Beetley, before descending through the woods and then Hoe Rough itself. A short detour took us up to Gressenhall Farm & Workhouse for refreshments, which were served very efficiently by the café staff. Then it was on to the route of Wensum Way, up through the trees, past the fruit bushes of Dillington and on to Quebec Corner. At this point, people began to go their different ways home - some down Quebec Road while most of us followed the Wensum Way route up (and down) Sandy Lane, then through the churchyard and back into town.

Bus to Elmham and walk back - Weds 20th May

We will catch the 10:00 Konect bus 21 from Dereham to North Elmham, for a 7 mile walk back to Dereham. To join this walk, please meet at 09:45 at the bus stop in the Market Place near Specsavers: bring your bus pass or fare.

Depending on the preferences of those walking, we may stop for refreshments at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse (no entry charge for those just using the café). We can then continue the walk back to Dereham, or there is the option of catching a bus back to Dereham from there, though buses are only hourly.

Before the month runs out, come and join us on our walk on Saturday 25 April. This will be under 4 miles, starting outside Church House (bottom of Church Street) at 13:30. We would expect to be back at about 15:00, when light refreshments will be provided as we hold our Annual Public Meeting in Church House.

This is an opportunity to tell us what you would like to see in future. As we are providing refreshments, it will help us make adequate provision if you could email [email protected] know if you are thinking of coming - you wouldn’t want to miss the cake, would you?

In spite of the greyness, 22 of us met at and set out from The Neatherd. Philip led us across a newly erected bridge, accessed from Queen Mother’s Avenue, and onto the land forming part of the developing country park.

From here we made our way up to Northall Green and on past Hoe Lodge, returning through the Highfield Estate to Quebec Road. We ended through the old cemetery to return to The Neatherd.

A number of us then went on to enjoy refreshments at the Mid-Norfolk Railway Station.
