🥋 WHO ARE THE PEOPLE BEHIND KING GEORGE V COMMUNITY CENTRE?

A few people have asked us recently who the organisation managing King George V Community Centre actually is.

The answer is NTC Derby - but the bigger answer is all of us.

NTC Derby is the organisation that took on the responsibility for managing the centre, but King George V is, and must remain, a community project.

It belongs to the community around it - the residents who care about its future, the volunteers who give their time and energy, the groups and organisations that use it, and everyone who walks through its doors.

Many people know NTC Derby first and foremost as a Taekwondo club. That's where our story began.

But Taekwondo has always been about much more than kicking and punching.

It teaches us discipline, focus, confidence, resilience, respect and determination. It teaches us to set goals, work hard and keep going when things become difficult.

And perhaps our journey with King George V tells you quite a lot about who we are.

When the opportunity came to secure the future of the centre, we decided to fight for it. We developed a vision, put in the work and successfully won the bid to manage King George V Community Centre.

How did a Taekwondo club end up running a community centre?

Perhaps because we're fighters. 🥋

Not fighters against people - fighters for the things we believe in.

We stay focused. We work hard. We don't give up easily. And when we commit to something, we do everything we can to deliver.

Those are the qualities we learn through Taekwondo. Those are the qualities we teach. And those are the qualities we bring to King George V.

But we also know that NTC Derby cannot build a thriving community centre alone.

King George V's future will be shaped together with local residents, volunteers, community groups, centre users, partners and everyone who wants to contribute something positive.

Some people will volunteer. Some will run activities. Some will attend events or classes. Some will simply come in for a cup of tea and a conversation.

Every one of them is part of the story. ❤️

Our role is to help create the conditions for that community to grow - to bring people together, create opportunities and make King George V a place that people genuinely feel belongs to them.

And if you're wondering where the mindset behind NTC Derby comes from, we'd love you to experience the place where our own journey started.

We’re so happy to see our facilities becoming busier and more groups choosing to use our space! 💛

Today was a perfect example of what our community space is all about – all at the same time, we had a relaxing yoga session in one room, a workshop in another, and creative art classes for children in the third. 🧘‍♀️🎨✨

It’s wonderful to see every room filled with different activities, bringing people together to learn, create, connect and enjoy themselves.

We’re delighted to see our space growing into such a lively and welcoming hub for the community. Thank you to all the groups who choose to be part of it! ❤️

Every day at KGV, we meet new people and hear new stories. 💚

One thing we often hear from people who live in Littleover and remember the KGV Pavilion from many years ago is just how impressed they are by what has been achieved here.

It was lovely to welcome this wonderful family yesterday, show them around, and hear their memories and stories of KGV from years gone by.

These conversations remind us that KGV is about much more than a building - it’s about people, memories, community and creating a place for everyone to enjoy, both now and for generations to come.

Thank you for visiting and sharing your story with us. It was a real pleasure having you! 😊

💚 A lovely visit from Peter and Eileen at KGV today! 💚

It was an absolute pleasure to welcome Peter and Eileen to KGV today and spend some time hearing their stories and ideas.

Eileen has lived in this area her entire life - an incredible 81 years! It’s moments like these that remind us how special our community is. Every day we meet new people, hear their stories, learn from their experiences, and discover new ideas for bringing people together. 🌿

Peter and Eileen shared some wonderful suggestions for activities they would love to see at KGV, including indoor bowling for people with disabilities, dementia-friendly groups, gentle exercise sessions for older people, and a community lunch club similar to one they currently volunteer with elsewhere.

These are fantastic ideas, and we will definitely be looking at how we might bring some of them to life at KGV. ❤️

Of course, community activities need community support! If anyone would be interested in helping, volunteering, or even leading one of these programmes, we would absolutely love to hear from you.

A huge thank you to Peter and Eileen for visiting us, sharing your stories and giving us so many great ideas. This is exactly what KGV is about - listening to our community and creating a place where everyone feels welcome and included. 💚
