Our second training walk for the three peaks challenge. 22 miles following the Grindleford Gallop Fell Race route. The team took it in their stride! A lovely day out, and one step closer to Fort William!

This marked the start of our trek up Kilimanjaro. The guides and porters were amazing, and just a little bit superhuman! A magical moment.

2/2 Honestly, they asked us to do it! The DGS Tanzania 2025 accidental Ukulele band in a (very!!) unique performance at the farewell ceremony at Amani School. They really were a lovely audience!

On a more serious note, the Ukeleles have found a new home at , where they will be in very talented hands!

DGS Tanzania 2025 Blog: Day 19

Aidan

For the more organised among us, our final day at st Dominic’s started as had every other. As for myself, the early hours of the morning were largely consumed by a frantic attempt to repack my suitcase, now with an additional kilo or so of assorted wares I had purchased from the market, Mr Tito’s and the Mwanza Art Gallery.

After eating breakfast and tutting at the few other team members who had been marginally more disorganised than myself, it was time to give our goodbyes and final thanks to Julie and to the drivers, before setting off for Mwanza airport.

Mwanza airport really was something special. No walls until passport control, a random Ikea-style display kitchen (not visibly for sale) plonked in the terminal and a small coffee counter with baked goods. As barebones as it may sound, at least it’s not East Midlands Parkway.

After a precision air prop plane hop to Kilimanjaro national airport, we took a coach through Arusha to the beautiful Marangu Hotel- our final outpost before we were to begin the final stage of the trip- Kilimanjaro.

DGS Tanzania 2025 blog Day 18:

Joseph

We began the day at 8 which Mr Speight considered to be a lie in. Half of us had decided to go to our first Tanzanian mass with Julie as such we put on our Sunday best and headed to church for 10 o'clock and heard the tail end of the 2 hour long Swahili mass. As the congregation left, one of the loudest and best church choirs I have ever heard came out singing with them. As we entered the church we were greeted with the scent of incense and the grandiosity of the building. When the altar party entered and the hymns began we noticed 2 visiting American priests ,the first foreigners we had really seen during the whole trip, who gave, quite aptly, a sermon on charity.

After church we quickly got off to Tilapia hotel that is according to Julie the nicest hotel in mwanza and sat on the lake Victoria. Lunch was nice, while their European food was still slightly unconventional it remained extremely tasty. After lunch we played in the pool and after a long week of painting and teaching, we relaxed in the sun. For dinner we went down stairs to the teppanyaki bar where we watched the sunset and waves from the lake hot against the wall. This was definitely the best way to share our last meal in Mwanza together as literally left with a fire ball.
