Match Report: Quorn Veterans FC vs FA Trust Academy Veterans
A Cold and Wet Friday Night Clash Under the Floodlights
On a chilly, rain-soaked Friday evening, Quorn Veterans FC made their debut as a team against the seasoned FA Trust Academy Veterans, under the glare of the floodlights. There was an air of uncertainty about Quornโ€™s prospects, given it was their first outing together, but the Trust squad were well acquainted over the course of the season. The Trust showed Quorn every respect by fielding a robust starting eleven, ready for a competitive encounter.
From the opening whistle, Quorn moved the ball with purpose, launching relentless attacks and pressing the Trust back repeatedly. The match remained goalless for the first 20 minutes, with Rossy pulling off a spectacular penalty save, diving right to keep the scores level. Manager Sutcliffe reacted to the early pressure, making tactical substitutions: Lee Martin departed after sustaining a knock, and Darren Newton made way for Darren Smith and Aaron Henry, with a change of system designed to counter Quornโ€™s lively full backs.
The impact was immediate as Darren Smith surged down the right flank, delivering a tempting cross that Callum Gurney narrowly missed converting. However, Quorn broke the deadlock soon after. Their number nine striker timed his run perfectly, collecting the ball in an onside position, and drove towards goal before elegantly lifting the ball over Rossy and into the net. Trust were forced into another change on 35 minutes, as James Adams was sidelined with a knee issue, allowing Simon Steadman to return to action earlier than anticipated.
Despite Quornโ€™s continued attacking efforts, Trustโ€™s defence and Rossy held firm. The midfield began to assert more control, and opportunities started to arise. A seemingly routine ball was played back to the Quorn goalkeeper, but with the keeper advanced, Darren Smith was alert, pouncing to tap home into an unguarded net from six yards and level the score at 1-1 just before halftime.
Inside the dressing room, tactical discussions led to two further Trust changes: Newts returned for Gurney, and Lee Martin replaced Woody at the back. The adjustments breathed new life into the team, with Newts holding up play and the industrious A*z and Daz providing dynamic support. Quornโ€™s threat persisted, and their striker notched a second goal, but Trust responded with determination. Darren Smith, in sharp form, seized on a through ball from Newts to prod it past the advancing keeper, bringing the score to 2-2.
With the match finely balanced, both sides pressed for a win. Trust made two final substitutions with 20 minutes remaining, as Aidan Gale and Dan Billings replaced Captain Dan Kellett and Mike Slack. A further system tweak saw Daz and Aidan operating on their natural sides, with A*z moving into the CAM role to exploit tired Quorn legs. Aidanโ€™s burst down the left was blocked for a corner, but the decisive moment came when Quornโ€™s striker headed home, sneaking in between the centre halves to make it 3-2.
Although Trust ultimately fell to a narrow defeat, the management were encouraged by the teamโ€™s performance and resilience against a club of Quornโ€™s pedigree. With two gilt-edged chances to equalise in the dying minutes for Lee Martin and John Hawkins, it was a display of grit and progress since the teamโ€™s inception last August. The 3-2 scoreline may not have been ideal, but the spirit and determination shown under the floodlights bodes well for the future.

On Sunday 5th October we took a FATBALL XI to Borrowash Victoria AFC to face our sister foundation, The FA Trust Academy Veterans in the first of what we hope to be many friendly matches over the coming years. This match proved a joint affair combining players from FATBALL Derby and FATBALL Long Eaton in aid of The Lewis Blake Foundation with friend of Lewis, Will Tozer and cousin of Lewis, Reece Blake representing FATBALL.
Will dominated the midfield alongside James Adams as FATBALL pressed again and again down the right in their 4-2-3-1 system, causing headaches (or more likely hangovers) for the Veterans' Daniel Wood, who was given a torrid time by Darren Smith. It didn't take long for FATBALL to take the lead as Scott Sturgess fired a sublime free kick past stand in keeper Adam Thompson.
Shortly after a swift move saw FATBALL double their lead as the ball was smashed past Thompson from close range.
In the order of the FATBALL spirit, we always ensure all players get good minutes, Martin Welsh replacing Darren Smith and Wayne McGlinchey replacing the impressive Aaron Rotherham, but the waves of attack continued with keeper Thompson pulling off one of the reaction saves of the century from point blank range. After 30 minutes the Trust Veterans started making changes themselves too, Dave Maskrey taking time out with Rocco Hawkins making a long awaited return to an 11 aside pitch.
With the tide slowly turning keeper Jack Connelly-Haywood was pulling off save after save to thwrt the Veterans threat until Veterans Captain Dan Kellett played a clever ball for Taberer to chase, meeting the ball just before keeper Connelly-Haywood he lifted it into the goal to half the defecit.
Half time FATBALL 2-1 Trust Veterans
Both teams made changes at half time but going downhill the Veterans managed to overpower the FATBALL guys, Aaron Henry firing a corner over for replacement Captain John Hawkins to win his header against Lee Martin (fine) and equalise. Henry then found space, twisting and turning before firing a sublime shot from the inside left channel for 3-2.
It wasn't all Veterans though with Kester O'Neill firing over from the edge of the area, Darren Smith coming close and Callum Gurney a constant threat too, this was a good and tight match which could still go either way, Nick McEntee standing out at left back for FATBALL.
It was the Veterans who struck next when a penalty was awarded, Oli Taberer on hand to fire home from the spot before a defensive mix up presented impressive debutant Danny Carlin to sidestep the keeper and slot into the empty net for 5-2.
Manager Sutcliffe withdrew Taberer for the closing minutes, Mike Slack showing drive and determination in his stead, once again defying his age as he pushed the FATBALL defence back.
FATBALL reverted to their original formation with a few personnel changes and soon found themselves on the front foot again, Thompson once again defying logic as he showed cat like reflexes to pull off another superb point blank save, proving the first was nothing to do with luck, shortly after beating a shot away and out of danger at full stretch to his left to maintain the scoreline.
Keeping the pressure up, in the very next attack Darren Smith evaded one tackle in the box but felled at the second to win a penalty, and frankly, Daz never misses penalties, 5-3.
In the closing minutes, Aaron Henry and Dan Kellett stood over a free kick on the right byline, Kellett moved away, leaving it to Henry to deliver, he slipped it square to Kellett who hit his reverse shot to the bottom left corner for a closing goal.
The football was great for both teams, but the winners on the day were The Lewis Blake Foundation who with a combination of raffle, stalls, donations and an on pitch fines system seeing a ยฃ250 donation from Artisan Joinery and Carpentry Ltd to the cause, a total of ยฃ2,000 was raised, a terrific starting point for the charity to build on.

Derbyshire CFC are proud to announce that our chosen charity for September is Cruse Bereavement Support. This incredible charity provides vital help to people going through grief, and weโ€™re honoured to raise funds for the amazing work they do throughout the whole month.

Cruse was highlighted by our Treasurer, Ben, when setting up the club. Following the passing of his Mum in September 2018, after a short battle with breast cancer, Ben received support from Cruse that made a real difference. On September 8th, it will be 7 years since her passing, and we felt September was the perfect time to give back to yet another worthy cause.

We canโ€™t wait to see you there! Come along, enjoy the football, and help us support a charity that changes lives. Every donation and bit of support makes a difference ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ–ค
