St Helens Council will no longer observe Black History Month, claiming taxpayers' money should not fund "subversive woke movements."

The Reform UK leader of St Helens Council announced that the local authority will stop observing the annual October event aimed at understanding black heritage and culture.

Cllr George Woodward said it was not appropriate for celebrations to focus on one skin tone, describing the month as "racist and divisive."

He said the council will always stand up for British culture and make no apology for doing so.

Labour MP for St Helens North, David Baines, hit back at the decision and accused the council leader of having a "twisted world view."

Mr Baines said the local authority leader is "utterly obsessed with American-style identity politics and culture war nonsense."

He added that the move deprives local schools and library staff of the opportunity to teach history and promote community cohesion.

The decision follows earlier announcements by the local authority leader that St Helens would no longer support or promote Pride events.

He also previously confirmed the council would withdraw support and funding for Refugee Week events.

Members of the public responded with concern online, with one person describing the move as "uneducated and dangerous rhetoric."

Another resident pointed out that the month is an opportunity to understand parts of British history that have often been omitted.

This Black History Month, ROOTS & RHYTHMS: I AM WHO I AM gives children a fun, creative space to explore Black history and culture through stories, music, art, play and discovery, building confidence and pride in who they are.

WHO CAN JOIN US?

Every child is welcome. We want children to learn together, be curious about one another and discover more about the histories and cultures that shape the world around them.

Because this is a Black History Month event created to help Black children see themselves, their heritage and their stories reflected and celebrated, if a session is oversubscribed, priority will be given to children of Black African and Caribbean heritage, including mixed/dual heritage children.

Children of all other heritages who want to learn, share and explore with us are warmly welcomed.

£3 per child (subsidised places are available if cost is a barrier).

Women of Derby – we’d love to hear from you 💜💚

Do you use local sports or leisure facilities? Maybe you’d like to be more active but something gets in the way. Or perhaps sport simply isn’t your thing.

All of those experiences matter.

We’re bringing together a small group of women for a relaxed 60-minute conversation with Ipsos researchers about what helps women to be active, what the barriers are, and what local facilities could do differently.

Update - Anya and Elaf, two teenagers who were reported missing from home in Derby, have been found safe and well - police confirmed at around 10am on Sunday morning, September 20.

An urgent search is under way for two schoolgirls who went missing from their homes in Derby.

Anya and Elaf, who are friends, were last seen leaving for school yesterday morning (Friday, September 18).

Derbyshire police said both teenagers did not arrive at their Sinfin school and have not been in contact with their families since that time.

Anya, 15, was last seen wearing a black jumper, black trousers, black coat and a black hijab. She was carrying a black school bag.

Elaf, 14, was last seen wearing a long black shirt, black top, black hijab, and a long green coat.

Officers said they are extremely concerned for their welfare and are urging anyone who may have seen them, or be aware of their whereabouts, to come forward.

It is believed that the girls could have boarded public transport as they both catch the bus to school in Sinfin.

The force added that Anya travels from Normanton Road and Elaf from Sunny Hill.

Anyone who may be able to assist with the search is asked to contact Derbyshire police via their website, page or by phone, calling 101.

The Derby Jallianwala Bagh Campaign Committee invites you to an informal presentation exploring the remarkable history of the Ghadar Party, the revolutionary movement that challenged British colonial rule and sought to overthrow the British Empire in India.

Dolly Parton gave generations of women songs of survival, humour, heartbreak and self-belief. Gloria Steinem helped turn women’s lived experiences into a public voice and a political movement.

Through music, film, readings and conversation, we will celebrate their courage, creativity, humour and lasting influence.

Derbyshire Maternity and Health Inequalities Forum Launch, Posters and Registration.

We would like to invite you to the launch event of the Derby and Derbyshire Maternity and Neonatal Health Inequalities Forum. Please see posters attached for sharing.

This new Forum brings together local communities, parents, families, community organisations, healthcare professionals and system leaders to work together to improve maternity and neonatal care and reduce inequalities across Derby and Derbyshire.

Over the past year, women and families from different communities have shared their experiences of maternity and neonatal services. We have listened carefully to what people told us. This event is an opportunity to share what we learned and, most importantly, work together on what happens next.

🏳️‍⚧️ One year on and Derby celebrates its second Trans Pride.

In a world where trans people are still too often talked about, judged and turned into a political debate, today is about something much simpler: people. Our friends, neighbours, colleagues and family members who deserve the same safety, dignity, respect and freedom as everyone else.

Pride matters because visibility matters. Belonging matters. Having somewhere you can simply be yourself without explanation or apology matters.

So today I stand proudly with Derby’s trans community, those I know and love, and those I’m yet to meet.

Be loud. Be joyful. Be safe. And know that you belong here.

Today we celebrate the courage, resilience and humanity of our trans community.

At MOSAICC, our toilets remain gender neutral.

Not because we ignore safety, but because we believe that safety, dignity and inclusion belong to everyone.

Trans people deserve to live openly, participate fully in community life, and access public spaces without being treated as a problem to be solved or a threat to be feared.

Our toilets have lockable cubicles. Everyone deserves privacy. Everyone deserves respect.

We will not start excluding people because of their gender identity, just as we would never exclude someone because of their race, disability, faith, age or sexual orientation.

MOSAICC exists to bring people together across difference, not to divide them.

We recognise that people hold different views, and respectful dialogue will always be welcome. But our commitment is clear: every person who walks through our doors should know they belong, they will be treated with dignity, and they will be safe from discrimination.
