Good turnout for this morning’s Osmaston remembrance service at Marble Hall Derby for those 23 men, women and children that lost their lives 84 years ago when 4 bombs were dropped over Osmaston during the war.

Some very heartfelt words and prayers were said during the service. War is an evil act upon a fellow human, may the day fast approach when we can see peace upon the world.

Thank you to all that attended, it was again a very memorable event.

We would like to invite you and your friends and colleagues to the annual Osmaston Memorial Service – 84th Anniversary Event.

Due to this year’s anniversary falling during a busy calendar period, we are holding our event on Friday 14th August and will replicate the ‘Friendship Circle Event’ format – the idea being to bring together friends who have joined us over the years, to remember the 23 family and friends, which for many of us, we never got to meet, but nonetheless we remember each year on this anniversary.

As you have joined us in previous years we welcome you to join us from 10.30am for light refreshments. At 11am there will be a moments silence, and words of reflection shared remembering those who lost their life, and floral tributes laid at the Memorial. Please feel free to extend the invitation to your friends and colleagues.

Further information…

On 27 July 1942 a lone German aircraft dropped four bombs on the vital Rolls-Royce Merlin engine factory in Derby, killing 23 people. It was Derby's most lethal air raid and took air defences and factory staff completely by surprise. Of the four bombs dropped, one hit the factory while the others hit nearby houses. The plane also sprayed the packed streets with machine-gun fire. Twelve people died in the factory, the rest outside. The youngest victim was two-year-old Sylvia Farmer, the oldest was George Gratton, 62.

Local residents campaigned for many years for a memorial to remember those who had died, and as a result of this campaign a new plaque was unveiled in 2017 at a commemorative event marking the 75th Anniversary of this devastating attack. The Memorial Plaque is positioned at the rear of Marble Hall, the last preserved part of the original factory site, and the unveiling was attended by local residents and historians, city leaders and dignitaries, and also surviving family members of those who were killed.

We would be delighted if you could join us to create a ‘friendship circle’ on this special occasion, and remember with us, those who sadly lost their lives. The event is taking place on Friday 14th August at the rear of Marble Hall. Guest are invited to arrive from 10.30am for refreshments. This a free event and everyone is welcome to attend.
