A huge thank you to the wonderful Strutts Stitchers from Belper, who chose Safe and Sound as their Charity of the Year last year.

The talented group have come together to create a beautiful handmade quilt for our therapy room at Bold Lane, and we absolutely love it! 💙

So much time, care and creativity has gone into making something truly special for our space.

Our therapy room is somewhere children and young people can feel comfortable, supported and listened to, and thoughtful touches like this help make it an even more welcoming environment.

Thank you to everyone at Strutts Stitchers for your kindness, generosity and continued support. We're incredibly grateful!

A quick update from Sophie Hargreaves on Mount Kilimanjaro! ☁️

Sophie has been taking on the incredible challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for Safe and Sound, and she's getting closer to the summit.

When we last heard from her, she'd reached the final camp before beginning the all-important summit push. What an achievement to have made it even this far!

We're all cheering you on, Sophie, and keeping everything crossed for the final climb! 💙👏

Sometimes you can't explain it. You just know something doesn't feel right.

Perhaps your child has become more secretive. Their friendship group has changed. They're spending time with new or older people. You've noticed changes in their behaviour, mood or relationship with their phone.

There could be many explanations for these changes, and one sign alone doesn't necessarily mean a young person is being exploited.

But you don't need proof before asking for help.

If you're worried about a child or young person, starting a conversation and asking for advice can be an important first step.

Exploitation doesn't always look frightening at the beginning.

Sometimes it can look like attention. Friendship. Gifts. Money. Someone offering somewhere to belong. Someone who seems to understand a young person when nobody else does.

That's part of what can make grooming so difficult to recognise.

The relationship a parent or professional sees as concerning may feel completely different to the young person experiencing it.

That's why conversations matter.

Stay curious about the people in their life. Keep talking about friendships and relationships, both online and offline. Most importantly, create space for them to talk without immediately fearing judgement or punishment.

“Safe and Sound should be the most inclusive space in the city.”

It's something our CEO Carly heard during her first few weeks with us, and it's a statement that has really stayed with her.

Because what does an inclusive space actually look like?

For us, it's somewhere a young person feels listened to rather than judged. Somewhere a parent or carer can ask for help without feeling they need to have all the answers. Somewhere people from across our communities feel welcome, respected and able to be themselves.

That's what we want our spaces at Safe and Sound to be and it's something we'll keep working towards! 💙

What if some of the people who could help create a safer future for a child were already around them?

That's one of the ideas at the heart of Family Group Conferencing. 💙

Instead of decisions simply being made for a family, an FGC creates a supported opportunity for families to come together, talk openly about what's happening and develop their own plan for moving forward.

The process recognises something incredibly important: families often have strengths, relationships and resources within them that can form part of the solution.

The child's voice matters. The family's voice matters. And the plan belongs to them.

Over October, we're going to take you behind the scenes of our Family Group Conferencing service and show you a little more about how it works.

Because sometimes prevention begins by getting the right people around the table.

The figures being reported this week about sexual offences against children in and around schools are deeply concerning.

One particularly important part of this conversation is that many of the alleged perpetrators identified were themselves under 18.

It reinforces why prevention and early intervention are so important. Children and young people need opportunities to understand consent, healthy relationships and boundaries, alongside trusted adults who recognise concerning behaviour and create safe opportunities to speak.

This isn't something for schools to tackle alone. Families, professionals, charities and communities all have a role to play in creating safer environments for children and young people.

At Safe and Sound, we believe safeguarding starts long before a crisis. Listening, education and early intervention matter.
