The esteemed Syrian writer and poet Al Ma'arri is often credited with being the first vegan philosopher around 1,000 years ago. Plant based diets have been widespread in multiple cultures and countries for millennia, with an increase in interest in plant based diets in the UK clearly visible over the last 200 years or so. Some of the early UK vegans were emerging around the first part of the 20th Century, notably with Arthur Ling, founder of vegan producers Plamil Foods in 1963, who went vegan aged 6 in 1926, nearly 2 decades before the word was coined.

The significance of the formation of The Vegan Society in 1944 was the creation of the first movement dedicated to ending the use of all animals. This social movement, based on the philosophy, or position, that seeks to end the use of all animals, has translated into today's myriad of both vegan and plant based options, as well as a flourishing global animal rights movement, and the establishment of the concept in law of Ethical veganism.

Truly a fascinating global history going back thousands of years.

Our blog series 'And If You Know Your History...' traces the development of the vegan social movement from 1944 through to the 70's and the growth of the Animal Rights Movement
