💜💚 What a Wonderful Launch for Derby Day Services! 💚💜

We're a little late sharing this, but what a fantastic day we had celebrating the launch of our new Wednesday Day Service! 🎉

It was such a lovely occasion, and we couldn't be happier with how well the day went. The warmth, encouragement and support we received meant so much to us, and it was wonderful to share our excitement about this next chapter for Derby Day Services.

We've had so many conversations with families about offering additional days, and we're delighted to be taking another step towards making that happen.

Of course, none of this would be possible without our wonderful clients, their families and our fantastic team, who continue to support us as we grow. A huge thank you to everyone who has been part of our journey so far! 💜

🌸 And now the countdown is on!

Our very first Wednesday session takes place on 14th October, and we absolutely cannot wait to welcome both new and existing clients!

It's the same Derby Day Services you know and love, with delicious food, fun activities, plenty of laughter, wonderful companionship and, most importantly, a place where everyone feels they belong.

💜💚 WE'RE GROWING! 💚💜

This Wednesday is a very special day for us as we officially celebrate the launch of our second Derby Day Services day! 🎉🥂

What started with a simple idea of creating somewhere that was about so much more than just being “looked after” has grown into the most wonderful little community of friendships, laughter, good food, activities, trips out and plenty of fun along the way.

And now we're ready for the next chapter. 💜

Our new Wednesday service will be a smaller group, giving us the opportunity to offer a relaxed and welcoming environment while keeping everything people have come to know and love about Derby Day Services.

There will still be plenty of laughter, conversation, activities, music, great food and probably the occasional bit of chaos. We wouldn't have it any other way! 😂

Most importantly, it will continue to be about companionship, community and connection.

💜 What a brilliant day we had at Derby Day Services! 💜

Yesterday was National Swap Ideas Day, so naturally we decided to have a little fun with it! 🔄😂

We started the morning with quite the breakfast spread: pancakes, yoghurt and a beautiful colourful selection of fresh fruit, along with teacakes and crumpets. 🥞🍓🍇☕ A very good way to start the day!

After some of our usual games, we split into two teams for a bit of friendly competition. We tossed beanbags onto our Twister-style game, but with a Swap Ideas Day twist. Land on SWAP and you could swap out one of your team members! 🎯😂

Then came the swapping game...
Everyone picked an item from a bag and could either keep it or persuade somebody else to swap.
Have you ever tried convincing someone that a packet of 40 white envelopes is a better deal than a tube of hand cream? 🤣🤣
There was some VERY questionable negotiating going on!

After a delicious pie lunch 🥧, we even managed to squeeze in a little dancing 💃🎶 before settling into smaller groups for one of our favourite parts of the day.

Everyone chose a coloured lolly stick containing a conversation prompt. We swapped stories about our favourite meals, best holidays, times we'd helped somebody, happy memories and special moments from our lives. 💭😊
And this is where something as simple as an activity becomes so much more.

We also asked everyone to share the best piece of advice they'd ever been given. ✍️💭 Everyone wrote theirs down and we managed to get a lovely photo of them all together, with names blurred for privacy of course! 💜

Some were thoughtful, some practical and some made us smile, but it was another lovely way of discovering a little more about the people behind the faces we see each week. 😊

Stories led to other stories. People asked questions, laughed together and discovered things they had in common. Some of our clients even got their phones out to share photographs with the group. 📱📸

We learnt even more about the wonderful people who spend their Thursdays with us, and they learnt more about each other too.
Because our activities aren't simply about filling the day.
They're about starting conversations.
Creating friendships.
Sharing memories.
Learning about the person sitting beside you.
And giving people something to look forward to. 💜

We also had the pleasure of welcoming some new clients and welcoming back some familiar faces we hadn't seen for a little while. 👋😊
So, all in all...
🥞 Plenty of food
😂 Plenty of laughter
🗣️ Plenty of conversation
💭 Plenty of memories
💃 A little dancing
💜 And another wonderful day together

🏙️ BUILDING SKYSCRAPERS… AND BUILDING OUR LIVES! 💜

Last week at Derby Day Services we celebrated National Skyscraper Day.

Now, if we're being completely truthful, not many skyscrapers survived long enough to be photographed… but an impressive number of biscuits were eaten! 😂🍪

Before we got anywhere near the biscuits, our wonderful Student Occupational Therapist, Ria, had prepared another fantastic morning for everyone.
Alongside some lovely quizzes, Ria created a brilliant activity called “Building Our Lives.”

Using a building as our template, we worked our way up through the different floors:
🏠 Our foundations
💜 Relationships
🎨 Interests
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 The roles we've had throughout our lives
⭐ Skills
📖 Experiences
😊 Things that make us happy
🔭 And finally, on the top floor… our future

It was such a simple idea but created some wonderful conversations.

Everyone really got involved and, once again, we discovered stories, experiences and little pieces of our clients' lives that we might otherwise never have known.

And that matters.

At Derby Day Services, getting to know somebody isn't just about knowing what support they may need. It's about knowing the person. Their history, their achievements, the people they've loved, the jobs they've done, what makes them laugh and what still matters to them today. 💜

After all that thinking, it was definitely time for lunch!
🐟🍟 We treated everyone to fish and chips from Markeaton Fish Bar, who were absolutely fantastic. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed them and ate so well that hardly anybody had room for pudding.

Hardly. Any. Pudding.
We were as shocked as you are. 😂

After lunch, we split into smaller groups for the serious business of biscuit skyscraper construction.

There was icing. There were biscuits. There were ambitious architectural plans.

Unfortunately, we only managed to get ONE photograph because everyone kept eating the building materials. 🤣🍪
Perhaps National Skyscraper Day wasn't quite celebrated in the traditional way, but we wouldn't have had it any other way.

Another wonderful day of laughter, conversation, learning more about one another and simply enjoying being together.

⚽💙 A VERY PROUD MORNING FOR DERBY DAY SERVICES! 💙⚽

This morning I had the absolute pleasure of visiting Stockbrook Colts 2005 to 2026 who Derby Day Services are incredibly proud to sponsor and today was extra special because the teams got to play in their brand-new shirts!

Seeing the Derby Day Services logo on the shirts, knowing that our sponsorship has helped provide the new kit, was a genuinely proud moment for me. 💜

It was wonderful to meet some of the players, coaches, managers, team captains and goalkeepers and to spend a little time getting to know more about the club and the people behind it.

But what struck me most wasn't just what happens on the football pitch.

I also spent some time in Jenny's Cabin, a fantastic little hub where siblings of the players can spend time while their brothers or sisters are training or playing. It is touches like this that show exactly what Stockbrook Colts 2005 to 2026 is about.

Yes, it's a football club.

But it's also community, inclusion, friendship and belonging.

They haven't forgotten that behind every player there is often a whole family standing on the side lines, and they've worked hard to create somewhere that welcomes everyone.

And THAT is exactly why I'm so pleased that Derby Day Services is supporting them.

We're two very different organisations, but we share something pretty important the belief that people need places where they can belong, make friends, have fun and be part of their community. 💜

So seeing our name on those shirts this morning meant considerably more than simply seeing our logo on a football kit.

We are exceptionally proud to sponsor Stockbrook Colts 2005 to 2026 and to play even a small part in supporting a club that has kept the heart of its community at the centre of everything it does.

Thank you to everyone for making me feel so welcome this morning.

Now there's just one small problem...

I think I'm going to have to start learning a LOT more about football. 😂⚽

💜 WHAT A THURSDAY AT DERBY DAY SERVICES! 💜

Yesterday was another one of those days that reminds us exactly what our day service is all about – good food, plenty of laughter, trying something new and, most importantly, enjoying the day together.

🍓 We started the morning with a lovely fresh breakfast of fruit, pancakes and yoghurt, with crumpets and toast available for those who fancied something a little more traditional.

Then it was time for our usual morning games before our wonderful OT student took over with some activities she had prepared for everyone.

And we've made a new investment...

📽️ We have a projector!

Obviously, we had to put it straight to work. 😂

We started with Guess the Programme, watching clips from old favourites including The Good Life, Porridge and Only Fools and Horses.

It was wonderful to see how a short television clip could trigger so many memories and conversations – not just remembering the programmes themselves, but talking about where people were, who they watched them with and life at the time. ❤️

We then moved on to some brilliant interactive games designed to get our brains working, followed by movement activities to get our bodies working too!

By then we'd definitely earned lunch...

🍽️ A full roast dinner!

Followed, naturally, by a lovely selection of desserts. Because we take the word full in full-day service very seriously. 😂

🧁 Then came possibly our favourite activity of the day...

Cake decorating!

Everyone learned how to use piping bags, experimenting with different coloured icing and learning how to make flowers and decorations.

The idea was that the finished cakes would be taken home for families to enjoy.

That was the idea.

Quite a few apparently failed to make it out of the building. 😂😂😂

Meanwhile, some of our gentlemen disappeared off for their now-regular game of pool. 🎱 There definitely seems to be a little competition developing there, although we're not naming names just yet!

Another fabulous day of food, friendship, memories, movement, learning, laughter and companionship.

And after the recent temperatures, I think we're ALL rather pleased that things have cooled down a little! ☀️😂

Now we're looking forward to next Thursday...

And we have something rather exciting happening. 👀

🧺 JUMBLE SALE – SATURDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER

A proper, good old-fashioned JUMBLE SALE! No fancy stalls, no complicated bits... just plenty of bargains to rummage through and hopefully a few treasures to find! 😂

And obviously there will be tea and cake... because quite frankly, is it even a Derby Day Services event without cake? ☕🍰😂

We will be accepting jumble donations every Thursday, so if you're having a clear-out, please think of us. Clothes, books, household bits, bric-a-brac – all those things you no longer need could help us raise funds.

🎄 CHRISTMAS FAYRE – SATURDAY 12TH DECEMBER 🎄
⏰ 12pm – 4pm

Yes, I know we're talking about Christmas already... sorry! 😂🎅

We're looking for all you wonderful crafters, makers and small local businesses who would like to join us.

Tables are just £5 each, but spaces are already starting to fill, so please get in touch and book yours as soon as possible.

We'll also have our Derby Day Services Christmas Raffle, along with chances to win some other lovely goodies throughout the day. 🎁🎟️

🌞 Keeping Everyone Safe During This Week's Heatwave 🌞

With another period of extreme temperatures forecast this week, we've made a few temporary changes to Thursday's day service to help keep our wonderful clients as safe and comfortable as possible.

Rather than cancelling the day, we've adjusted our transport arrangements so that everyone can enjoy the cooler part of the day before temperatures rise later in the afternoon.

We'll also be making a few changes inside the venue by keeping doors open to improve airflow, ensuring plenty of cold drinks are available throughout the day and adapting our activities so everyone can stay cool whilst still enjoying everything Derby Day Services has to offer.

This week is particularly special as we're celebrating two birthdays, and we're looking forward to marking the occasion with a lovely Afternoon Tea and plenty of smiles. 🎂💜

The health and wellbeing of our clients will always come first, and we will continue to monitor everyone throughout the day. If we feel anyone is struggling with the heat, we will take the appropriate action to ensure they remain safe and comfortable.

Friendship Makes Life Bloom 🌸

What a wonderful day we had at Derby Day Services yesterday as we celebrated International Friendship Day.

The laughter started with our ever popular Sticky Bingo, with one of our wonderful clients taking on the important role of calling the numbers and doing a fantastic job! We also enjoyed a friendship-themed quiz, along with plenty of our favourite games that always bring smiles and laughter.

Lunch was chosen by our clients (as always!) and this week the winner was a firm favourite... fish and chips! 🐟🍟

The afternoon was filled with something for everyone. Some of our gentlemen enjoyed a game of pool, others preferred a quieter game of Connect Four, while Kerplunk made a welcome return and proved just as popular as ever!

Our creative side came out too, with everyone making beautiful photo frames to take home for someone special. We also created our very own Friendship Tree. 🍃

Each leaf represented someone important in our lives and why they mean so much to us. It sparked some lovely conversations, wonderful memories and a few emotional moments too. (You'll notice the names have been blurred in the photographs to protect everyone's privacy.)

Before heading home, each of our clients received a little gift bag with the message:
"Friendship Makes Life Bloom." 💜

Because that's exactly what friendship does.

At Derby Day Services, we believe it's the friendships, laughter, conversations and shared experiences that make every Thursday so special. Yesterday was another reminder that we're building far more than a day service we're building a community where everyone belongs.

Finally, every month we take the opportunity to celebrate one of our incredible volunteers who gives so much of their time to make Derby Day Services the special place it is. This month, we were delighted to recognise the ever-wonderful Avala. To show our appreciation, we presented her with a card, flowers and a gift card. It felt especially fitting to celebrate her on Friendship Day, as her kindness, compassion and friendship brighten the lives of everyone she meets. Thank you, Avala, for everything you do we are so grateful to have you as part of the Derby Day Services family. 💜🌸

🎾 Wimbledon came to Derby Day Services! 🍓

Yesterday was another wonderful day at Derby Day Services as we swapped West End Community Centre Derby for Centre Court!

Our clients enjoyed a fun-filled Wimbledon-themed day complete with strawberries and cream, tennis-themed games, plenty of laughter and, as always, wonderful company.

We were delighted to welcome Adam from Stockbrook Colts 2005 to 2026 who came along to meet everyone. We're really looking forward to supporting such a fantastic local organisation and building another great community partnership.

The day began with some gentle exercises... led by me! Let's just say my tennis outfit probably created more laughter than my exercise routine, but judging by the smiles on everyone's faces, I'd say that was a success!

As the day went on, an impromptu singalong broke out, proving once again that some of the best moments are never planned. After a delicious lunch, some of our clients decorated beautiful handheld fans in preparation for the predicted heatwave next week, while others enjoyed a game of indoor boules, which quickly became a firm favourite.

Before we knew it, it was time to head home. In fact, the day had gone so well that we completely lost track of time.

At Derby Day Services, every activity has a purpose. Behind the games, the decorations and the themed days is something much more important.

For a few precious hours, people stop being defined by a diagnosis and simply enjoy being themselves again. They laugh, make choices, build friendships, share memories and continue to remain the focal point in their own lives.

That's why Derby Day Services exists.

One of the things we love most is bringing our local community through our doors. If you have a hobby, talent or interest you'd be happy to share, whether that's talking about old Derby, singing a few songs, leading some gentle exercise, demonstrating a craft or simply spending time with our clients, we'd love to hear from you. You never know how much a simple visit could mean to someone.
