What a beautiful and impactful day we had yesterday at the Cameroon Community Development Center CIC Wellness Walk & Connect event!

We are truly grateful to everyone who came out to support, walk, connect, socialize, and celebrate community with us.

A special thank you to Community Action for supporting and believing in our CIC, Derby City Council for providing free space at Alvaston Park, and Derby Homes for giving us a venue. Thank you as well to all our amazing trustees whose hard work made the event a success.

Yesterday was more than just an event — it was real community impact. We welcomed and served the wider Derby community, sharing refreshments with everyone around the park, including passersby who saw what we were doing and joined us.

The feedback we received was overwhelming:
✨ “This is amazing.”
✨ “I feel so happy.”
✨ “Is this happening every week?”
✨ “When are you coming back?”

Even children were excited and asking if the event would happen weekly because they enjoyed it so much. People from different backgrounds came together, connected, laughed, interacted, and felt included.

Yesterday showed the power of unity, wellness, inclusion, and community connection. We are proud that Cameroon Community Development Center CIC was able to make such a positive impact in Derby.

This is only the beginning.

Today I attended a very insightful and impactful workshop organised by Community Action Derby, focused on supporting unpaid carers

It was a powerful session that brought to light the everyday realities many people face quietly caring for loved ones without always recognising themselves as “carers.”

We explored real-life examples such as:

* Young people supporting a parent with a long-term illness
* Individuals caring for elderly parents with daily needs like medication, appointments, and meals
* Family members supporting loved ones with disabilities or mental health challenges
* Friends and relatives stepping in during times of crisis

What stood out deeply was the emotional side of caring, the pressure, responsibility, and often the lack of support or recognition. Many unpaid carers carry so much, yet have limited power, limited voice, and limited access to support systems, which can lead to isolation and burnout.

As a PhD student researching leadership styles and their impact on employee performance, particularly carers in the assisted living sector in the East Midlands, UK, this workshop was especially meaningful to me.

I also had the opportunity to share real-life experiences, speak briefly about my research focus, and highlight some of the initiatives and work we are doing through our CIC. It was a valuable moment of exchange connecting research with real community experiences.

A key part of the workshop focused on the roadmap and way forward for how we can begin to bridge the unpaid carers' gap. We discussed the importance of not just signposting or referring carers to services, but ensuring they understand the actual outcomes they can expect. It’s about moving beyond “here is a service” to “this is how this service will support you, and this is the difference it will make.”

We also explored how Community Action Derby Carers, through their referral teams, can better communicate this journey and support carers in a more transparent and outcome-focused way.

Another important conversation was around raising awareness on how we can better get the word out so more unpaid carers recognise themselves and access support, and the importance of self-advocacy, empowering carers to speak up for their needs and wellbeing.

While my current research focuses on paid carers, today’s discussions around emotions, emotional labour, and the lack of structured support for unpaid carers really resonated. It has broadened my perspective and highlighted an important gap, and I will be looking for opportunities to explore unpaid carers in the future.

As a CIC, this aligns strongly with our mission supporting individuals and families not just practically, but emotionally and socially. It reinforces the importance of community, awareness, and meaningful support pathways.

Thank you to Community Action Derby for creating such a reflective and important space 🙏

Hello everyone, my name is Ella Benyela, and I’m the founder of the Cameroon Community Development Centre CIC.

Welcome to this new series where we’ll be sharing our journey, our purpose, and the work we are doing to support our community.

This CIC was created from a real place of need. Many people in our community face challenges when trying to settle and build their lives here in the UK. These challenges include accessing employment, finding safe and affordable housing, understanding immigration processes, and even knowing how to access healthcare services.

And beyond that, there is something deeper — isolation, lack of guidance, and not having the right support system in place.

That is why we started this CIC.

Our goal is to create a space where people feel supported, informed, and empowered. A space where individuals can access guidance, connect with others, and find practical solutions to real-life challenges.

Through this initiative, we will be delivering community workshops, offering guidance and signposting to the right services, supporting people with housing pathways, and creating opportunities for cultural connection and wellbeing.

We are not here to replace existing services we are here to bridge the gap, to help people understand and access the support that already exists, and to make sure no one feels left behind.

As a newly established CIC, we are still growing. We are building partnerships, seeking support, and working towards creating a strong foundation that will benefit not just individuals, but the wider community.

In this series, we’ll be sharing more about what we do, the impact we want to make, and how you can be part of this journey.

Whether you are someone who needs support, someone who wants to collaborate, or someone who simply believes in community this space is for you.

Thank you for being here, and welcome to our journey.”

🌟 Community Action Derby Voluntary Sector Forum – A Great Day of Connection & Insight 🌟

Today, myself and one of our trustees Emambo Bernis had the privilege of attending the Community Action Derby Voluntary Sector Forum at St. Alkmund’s Church.

It was a powerful and inspiring session, bringing together organisations across Derby who are all working towards one goal strengthening our communities and supporting those who need it most.

We gained valuable insights into:
✔ The current state of the voluntary sector and the challenges many organisations are facing
✔ Opportunities for training, volunteering, and community development
✔ Ongoing projects making real impact across Derby

It was also a great opportunity to network, connect, and share ideas with other passionate organisations and community leaders.

At Cameroon Community Development Centre CIC, we are proud to be part of this growing network working together to support migrants, families, and the wider community through information, guidance, and empowerment.

🤝 We look forward to building new partnerships and continuing to make a positive difference.

Thank you to Community Action Derby for hosting such a well-organised and impactful event.
