One of the highlights of last years Dartmouth Book Festival was Rosemary Griggs - she certainly made an entrance when she arrived at the Flavel fully attired in a lavishly detailed Tudor dress.

We are delighted to welcome her back again this year - Rosemary brings Devon’s sixteenth century history to life with her unique blend of history, theatre and re-enactment at events throughout the west of England. Through her extensive research she has discovered a cast of fascinating characters and families whose influence stretched far beyond the West Country. She tells the stories of women often forgotten in history in her bestselling series, The Daughters of Devon.

As well as delving into the research for her latest novel, Mistress of Dartington Hall, Rosemary will introduce her next non-fiction project with an exciting Cover Reveal.

Dartmouth Book Festival 2025
There is only 1 day to go until this year’s Dartmouth Book Festival starts tomorrow on Friday 19th September. It’s officially Festival eve…

The weather this week isn’t looking great so why don’t you guarantee yourself a dry time and book some festival tickets. There is something for everyone. Just look at what’s on Sunday…
Every Sunday morning should start with some period dress in our view as Rosemary Griggs returns to talk about Devon women in history. While still on the history theme why not drop in to hear Sir Paul Coleridge discuss his own ancestors and how they outraged society, or listen to biographer Rachel Tretheway talk about the mother of the most scandalous Mitford sisters. Perhaps your interest is to go back further in time to hear classics expert and novelist Emily Hauser expose the real role women played in antiquity.
No book festival is complete without crime fiction galore and whether that is listening to award-winning CB Everett talking about his latest country house mystery or hearing from experts Andrew Wilson and Dr Mark Aldridge on the most successful novelist ever, Devon born Agatha Christie, you are in for a treat.
And that sadly is the end for this year!

If you haven’t already booked your place then please check out the full programme line up. Tickets are on sale at The Flavel Arts Centre and online at www.theflavel.org.uk. Book your place at the Dartmouth Book Festival 2025 before it’s too late.

Dartmouth Book Festival 2025 (Wednesday 17 September)
It’s getting closer with only 2 days to go until this year’s Dartmouth Book Festival starts on Friday 19th September.

With the forecast looking less than ideal, why not book some festival tickets and stay dry this weekend. There is something for everyone. Just look at what’s on Saturday…
Nominate a responsible adult to take the kids to the Library for the children’s activity while you listen to Anna Turns and Jo Loosemore discuss their new BBC series Secrets of the Sea. Or perhaps Alec Smith’s book collecting journey is more your cup of tea.
With Poppy Okotcha inspiring us to forage and grow our own food and the Poetry group discussing The Dart, our natural environment is given centre stage today.
There is another chance to stretch your legs on the literary walk and if you time it well, you could sandwich it between crime novelist William Shaw and tech thriller writer Thomas R Weaver.
With truth often stranger than fiction, prepare to be stunned by science writer Alex Riley’s portrait of the resilience of life in impossible places while comedian, actor and writer Robin Ince talking about his own adventures in neurodiversity is sure to be a highlight.
Murder most horrid will be served up by Devon based Stephanie Austin and food writer turned crime novelist Orlando Murrin and if you need a dose of reality after that, then writer and biographer AN Wilson will be in conversation with Harry Mount on Goethe and Queen Victoria.
And it isn’t over yet!

If you haven’t already booked your place then please check out the full programme line up. Tickets are on sale at The Flavel Arts Centre and online at www.theflavel.org.uk. Book your place at the Dartmouth Book Festival 2025 before it’s too late.

Dartmouth Book Festival 2025
The countdown is on with only 4 days to go until this year’s Dartmouth Book Festival starts on Friday 19th September.

With continued mixed weather this week why don’t you pick an inside activity and book some festival tickets. There is something for everyone. Just look at what’s on Friday…
You could kick off your day with a Vienna cafe experience with John Suchet talking about the Strauss family, stretch your legs between showers with the literary walking tour or listen to master of crime Robert Goddard. Or perhaps you fancy writing yourself? if so sign up for the creative writing workshop.
Are you interested in the town’s fascinating history then hear about it from Dartmouth History Group or guess the real life Devon inspiration in Kate Ellis’ history and mystery novels.
If your preference is for fact over fiction why not see Wendy Joseph KC and learn more about our legal system and the questions it raises for society or delve into military historian Lieutenant Colonel Tim Spicer’s latest offering about the greatest spy you have never heard of (rumoured to be the inspiration for Bond)!
If you are simply looking for great reads to curl up with as the nights draw in, then novelists Sophie Hannah and Rachel Joyce are worthy of your attention.
And that’s just day one!

If you haven’t already booked your place then please check out the full programme line up. Tickets are on sale at The Flavel Arts Centre and online at www.theflavel.org.uk. Book your place at the Dartmouth Book Festival 2025 before it’s too late.
